Punk has a case for most overrated wrestler today, simply due to a large portion of the IWC drooling over the guy even though he's clearly lost a step. That's not even a knock on him, as he's old enough where that's allowable, but the fact that he doesn't seem to have adjusted his style to fit his age is bothersome to me. He should not be trying to do moves that he knows he's not capable of doing, and I fear that he's just going to fall right back into that habit when he returns. Hope I'm wrong, though, because it would be nice to see him have a decent title run to help further establish its lineage.

    Gresham for me.

Gresham is for sure the better nuts and bolts wrestler in this matchup, but the best match of his I can think of within the last year was against Chris Sabin in Impact. Which, it was an awesome match, but the fact that it's his best to me kind of makes this an easy vote in favor of Punk. He's just in a much better position to have great matches, which he's done, despite avoidable botches. With ROH ramping back up, I think Gresham can re-establish himself as one of the best in the world and I really think the day will come when he probably wins this tournament. But for now, I'm picking Punk.

Gresham is a good mile or two ahead of Punk in ring and comes off more legit.

Gresham vs Bandido was better than anything i saw from Punk. Plus he has his matches vs Sabin, vs Blake at GCW Astronaut and had some great matches in WXW.

I hope popularity doesnt affect the outcome on this

Punk has had some really good matches, such as the MJF Dynamite match but Gresham is consistently a great edition to any show he's on match wise. The Terminus work has been disappointing but everything else has been a hit.

    Gresham for me.
Punk's strengths as a worker have always been his personality, grasp of psychology and story-telling, how to structure and pace a match, etc. basically the intrinsic stuff that separates a great worker from a good one, and in those areas he hasn't missed a step at all.

What is the best match Gresham has had in the last 12 months? Would even stack up against Punk's 5th best match?

I like Gresham a lot but he is guilty of being very mechanical times and working a bunch of technical stuff in a vacuum with no consideration to getting fans actually invested in what he's doing.

vs. Bandido at Supercard of Honor
vs. Blake Christian at GCW Astronaut
vs. Chris Sabin at Hard to Kill
vs. Josh Alexander at Terminus All Roads Lead Here

I don't know what Punk's 5th best match is but I'd put any of these against it.

I'll give you Punk is still good at the psychology aspect of pro wrestling, but I'm also not looking past his inability to change his actual in-ring style to suit his current condition. It's a hindrance every single time I watch him perform, and the excuses being made for it fall on deaf ears with me.

I'm not really sure what you mean by not changing his style. He was never a flashy guy or someone who relied on highspots. OK he screwed up a couple spots in that Page match but his move-to-move execution is probably better now than it was in the past if anything (most of his strikes hit hard, he does less stuff like the matrix flip, etc).

Gresham vs Bandido and Christian were totally average and forgettable (and I don't lay that all on Gresham). The Sabin and Alexander matches were fine but were also pretty forgettable, wouldn't put them on the same level as the Punk vs MJF matches or his matches against the FTR guys personally.

Then we're going to have to agree to disagree. It doesn't help that I've never been as high on Punk as some, but that notwithstanding I think it's pretty obvious that he's lost a step in the ring. I'm not even talking about the Page match either. The tag with FTR the following Wednesday had three bad incidents that took me out of the match.

With that being said, I still wouldn't put any of those Gresham matches against the stuff with MJF (the whole feud being considered as well) but those aren't his 5th best and that's what you asked.

I voted Gresham, they're both great, but I had to give one to the fellow short guy.

Re: WC's Best Wrestler Tournament 2022 3rd Round - Jonathan Gresham Vs CM Punk

Really struggling with this one so took a few days to think about it.

I didn't have any problem with CM Punk's work until the match he had with Dustin Rhodes where it came off weird to me that Punk despite being someone I was supposed to take seriously as a #1 contender to Hangman Page, was struggling in a 18 minute match with 53 year old Dustin Rhodes where you couldn't tell which man was older because he was so determined to prove he was a 'good worker' that he dropped down to Rhodes' level to the detriment of his story of chasing the World title. And then come the Hangman match he didn't look very good at all, blew the two key spots in the match and didn't come off like a guy that deserved to be the World Champion. Then I start thinking back to his other TV matches where he's shoe-horning in Bret Hart spots just because he wants to, he's coming off a pretty indulgent wrestler in 2022 and the stuff he's adding to his matches isn't helping them.

That being said, Kingston/Punk was my MOTY, by quite a margin.

I think Gresham on the other hand has his act and style down and is one of the best at what he does. I tend to agree with Steve's point about Gresham not having standout matches, but he's been a bit of a drifter this year because of the ROH stoppage where all he's able to work is random title defences on indies that have no juice because there's no chance of the title switching hands and no storyline build up to these matches because he's facing someone different every time. I feel like that is what's missing from taking his matches to the next level, to be involved in something that feels important and get out of this stalemate booking he's been stuck in this year. It's nothing he's doing wrong, whereas I feel like Punk is stopping certain matches from being as good as they could have been. I not sure either of those MJF matches will be on my top 25 come December.

Probs a bit late, but Impact have uploaded that Gresham/Sabin match to their YouTube channel in case anyone is still on the fence.
