Re: Premier League 2021/22 Discussion Thread

For anyone wondering just how fucked up things are at Everton right now, there were reports this weekend that some board members are pushing to fire Benitez and hire Mourinho. The same flaming failure Mourinho who is in the process of burning Roma to to the ground.

That said, I don't have confidence in Arsenal doing anything here today. We could run out and run them over, we could get run over, or we could play well but fail to score and then concede a dumb goal because well, that's kinda the Arsenal way at this point.

Funny how a manager that does the "tactical stuff" can make a difference for a club lol. Now imagine if they had looked to moveon from Ole sooner... Could have at least won the Europa League.... If Ronaldo continues to do a good amount of off the ball work, even if he isn't outright pressing, then I think he will be fine in the system.

Burnley are in real fucking trouble, aren't they?

Oh shit Auba's on the bench. Good call by Arteta. Xhaka is back and Tierny is at LB ahead of Tavares. Theoretically all good changes lol

so far, Ben Godfrey has gone knee-to-knee with Saka and drew blood by stomping on Tomiyasu's face. And Mike Dean has decided that no action is required on either.

    Fuck Mike Dean.

Re: Premier League 2021/22 Discussion Thread

Absolutely prototypical loss. We created nothing. We went from front foot to back foot after we scored. Our primary defensive idea seemed "Just hope its offside when they score". which actually fucking worked twice. 2nd time was tight as fuck and I'd be pissed if it went against us. That winning goal was ridiculous. You can't just keep backing off and refusing to make challenges like that.

Think I'm more annoyed at the face stamp than another avoidable loss to a team in dire form. I really enjoyed the halftime pundits saying that VAR was absolutely right not to suggest that Mike Dean take a second look at it because that make him question whether he'd make the right decision. And we apparently all know that Mike Dean cannot possibly not make the right decision when he's 20 yards away and there is a tangle of legs blocking his view, at best. Why the fuck is VAR even a thing if the ref's feelings matter more than getting a call right?

Arsenal didn't deserve to win this. Played poor, created nothing, uninspired. The winning run was nice but papered over some pretty evident cracks.

I never want to see Nketiah in a Arsenal shirt again. Prick wants to leave and we're playing him over Balogun who signed an extension? Fuckin clown shoes club

That was the worst performance of the season without a doubt. Brentford we had players out from Covid, fair enough. Chelsea, Liverpool & City are levels above us, fair enough. United was disappointing but ultimately no that shocking because we're equal. That's a fucking terrible Everton team. A fanbase that hates their board and manager. And we chucked it from minute one and, honestly, were fuckin lucky it wasn't 4. Those VAR decisions could've gone either way. The ref didn't give a straight red to Godfrey despite curb stomping Tomiyasu, and still the ref did more to try and help Arsenal win than we did

We were shite all first half but sneaked a goal, so you think "aye, that'll be a wakeup call after we chucked it at ManU"

Nup. Somehow, beyond all possibility, we were worse. Xhaka gettin a full 90 minutes while being unfit and tired was poor, subbing Tierney at the time made sense, but we looked considerably weaker defensively when he came off, which is saying something considering Tierney has never been a particularly excellent tackler or anything like that. Nketiah is half arsing it at best, Auba should be nowhere near the pitch after that shit with liking ManU posts celebrating after beating us. Fuckin awful.

Arteta has no attacking plan at all. Our plan is give it to Saka, or if that fails, Tierney, and hope someone makes a run. It might get better once Arteta gets a striker who can actually header a fuckin ball, but he's goin to sack himself at this rate if he doesn't get a Plan B. It's been 2 and a half seasons now, he should have a 2nd game plan by now.

I've re-watched the Godfrey/Tomiyasu incident a few times now and I don't understand how the hell the VAR hasn't at least told Mike Dean to take a look at that incident. I mean, Dean himself wasn't a million miles away from it but then for the VAR not to be screaming down his ear telling him to stop the game to reveiw that incident is a bit of a joke. There's no quesiton in my mind that it's a red card.

That is probably the most infuriating part. Its subjective because intent has to be taken into consideration and intent is impossible to truly know. But when he looks down, looks away, and then puts his foot down... its at the very least suspect. I've seen a bunch of "well, he has to put his foot down somewhere, no other choice" comments and... no he doesn't? He can fall backwards onto his ass if putting his foot down is going to, you know, potentially injure someone. When "intent" has to be considered, refs usually err on the side of not intended (unless its an Arsenal player, it seems). So there is every chance that Dean would have looked at it, upheld his view, and not done anything further. But for VAR to be like "nope, Dean can see it perfect from behind and 15 yards away, he's got it dead on" is completely counter to the intent of VAR.

I'm not entirely convinced a 10-man Everton wouldn't have beaten us anyway. That was a 4-1 loss disguised as a 2-1 loss because of those tight offside calls that went against Everton. We created very little, couldn't convert what we did create, and did the whole "we got a lead, time to back off" thing. Which is becoming quite problematic and Odegaard even commented about it after the match. If Arteta can't coach that out of them, he needs to be gone because you can't have a side that goes to pieces mentally when they get the fucking lead in a match. And that's what we are doing.

Agreed with everything you said. I personally think there was at least a hint of intent in there. Like you said, the way he looks to see where Tomiyasu is, then looks up then puts his foot down and looks again tells me he knows exactly what he was doing. Caragher and Neville both said that they thought it was intentional too, and as defenders who liked putting their foot in they'd know all about that. I just don't understand why the VAR didn't get involved.

Not to mention that Godfrey was playing right on the edge yesterday. He went knee to knee with Saka about 10 minutes before this (again, another moment where you can't prove intent) and at least one other cardable foul plus the foul that actually got him a yellow card. Someone who is playing reckless and doesn't seem to care if he hurts an opponent is exactly the kind of thing a ref should be reigning in. And mike Dean did absolutely fucking nothing.

Even taking the stomping away, Godfrey should've been double booked anyway with his fouling gonna just mute the Arteta and Arsenal part of twitter the now, it's really doin my box in the amount of shite goin about it talking about how we need to sack Arteta now and making out its his fault we've been shite, as if we haven't been doing this thing under Wenger and Emery for years interesting that the Kroenkes and all the CEOS crawled out the woodwork to get praise from our winning run, and now if we go on a shit run they'll hide like the coward shitheads they are :D

Re: Premier League 2021/22 Discussion Thread

Its okay. You can endlessly foul Arsenal and not get a card for it. I recall last year when a player had something like 12 or 14 fouls in a single match. No yellow. Was against Arsenal. Second most fouls in a single match by a player without a yellow? Also against Arsenal. But unlike the full blast kick to Saka's leg a few weeks ago that apparently didn't even warrant a yellow card, at least this seems to be getting a bit more media attention. Not that it will make a difference…

I'm glad I haven't been on social media too much. I can imagine a lot of folks are freaking out, even worse than me at most reactionary. I might listen to the ArseCast later as it sometimes make feel better about shit results. But that doesn't always work. sometimes one must just suffer.

Blaming it all on Arteta is asinine IMO. I mean, some of its his fault. questionable squad selection, lack of tactical intent in attack, bad subs, etc. But he is a novice manager learning on the job. He was put in a difficult situation and he's shown some of the same failings as his predecessors. I don't have faith he can really progress us or move us forward. But sacking hm isn't going to solve much of anything. We are still going to have deficiencies and issues. We still have ownership who fundamentally don't care about us as a football club, the supporters, or really even the product put on the field. They are about return on investment.

Yeah agreed, no possible surprise results stand out here. Decent round of games for anyone doing a footy accumilator!

Palace vs Everton should be a close game and I can see Leicester vs Newcastle being a close one too. Leicester need to bounce back from the disappointment of going out of the Europa League and Newcastle will want to build on their first win of the season last weekend.
United should batter Norwich, hope we score heavy in that game.

Hope Wolves can cause an upset in the early KO or at least push Man City close. Indifferent form has crept up on Chelsea - 2 wins in the last 5 but I can’t see Leeds getting anything. Liverpool only put 1 past Wolves so hopefully Villa can keep it 0-0 for a while then see what happens.

So Auba is out based on discipline so it probably was his missing training.

Tuned in on few minutes in and it was all Southampton. And then we scored. And then again. This fucking team...

Southampton are goin down I'm convinced. They were fuckin awful first 20 minutes was worrying, but after the goal we basically dominated them. Laca should've had a hat trick in the first half, Martinelli and Saka hit the bar as well. Great performance to get the confidence back up, but it is worrying how we can seem to handle a team that presses. Will need to see how West Ham plays out

Re: Premier League 2021/22 Discussion Thread

That was not the result I expected out of the first 20 minutes. I turned it on after 10 minutes and from there until the first goal, it was pretty much all Southampton. We did fuck all. Could not string passes together so couldn't hold onto the ball. We really struggle sometimes against an effective press and we refuse to deviate from the build from the back mentality, so yeah... good times ensure.
Then we got the counter attacking 1st goal and it opened up and we actually did more in attack than in probably any recent match. That's probably our best xG of the season TBH.

Still leaves me with zero expectations either way against West Ham.

Sounds like Auba went on a trip with club permission and returned later than agreed, causing issues with COVID protocols, and that led to him being dropped.

Southampton look good at times but can't seem to hold that together thru full matches for results.

    How stupid was Jimenez!

Ralph Pulis getting another 1-0. Thought Norwich deserved at least a point.
