On the opposite side, Rangers under investigation for an alleged video of players singing anti Catholic remarks (very serious here).

Cant stress enough, if genuine, how rotten it truly is. Especially as they have a player who was racially abused.

Holding out hope its a fake but this weekend has been quite the eye opener for some.

    Re: General Football Discussion

Fuck me but it would be shitty if Rangers managed to do something like that after their experience in the Europa League.

First leg of the Championship Semi Finals today. I like both Bournemouth and Brentford and can't really pick between them. Would legit like to see both in the Premier League.

Was surprised to hear how much some EFL experts were favoring Barnsley over Swansea due to playstyle. Do expect Swans to get to the playoff final, though.

I might join Ed in joining more attention to the Championship next year. So much about the Prem is just frustrating and I can't see it getting better in the near future.

I don't think they would. It was on a live stream apparently but that could also be doctored I suppose. Truth will eventually come out. Bit too much to jump to a conclusion that suggest anything deliberate on Rangers' part. Probably few people said the thing but doubt it was everyone and it's just merged into the sound. Also don't think Rangers would survive the reputation hit for publicly defending this and then being found to be untruthful.

    Re: General Football Discussion

So a kinda fun story from South America today. Because of COVID positivies, River Plate had 11 players available for their Copa Libertadores match against Santa Fe. 11 players in total. No subs. But more problematic, none of the 11 were GKs. So they had midfielder enzo Perez play in goal for the whole match.

    River won 2-1.

As easy as it is to get at COMNEBOL, apparently they did allow clubs to register way more players than normal but river Plate chose to register the normal number. So yeah, they are definitely partly responsible too.

Everyone will be focused on the playoffs and that today, BUT St Johnstone winning a cup double, only team to do that outside of Celtic, Rangers & Aberdeen in the 80s, is one of, if not the greatest achievement in modern scottish football history. Considering most people were tipping them for relegation at the beginning of the season, for them to do THIS is unbelievable. Callum Davidson has done a fantastic job and if he keeps this up next season I don't see how any club in the championship or even the old firm aren't chomping at the bitt to try get him

Well... it happened. Besides Schalke, Bremen got hit by the relegation ghost as well and with the (again) failed promotion from Hamburg, next year's second Bundesliga will feature all three of these big names of yesteryear. What a fascinating time here in Germany. I never thought I would see all three of them playing only 2nd level at the same time.

The ManU players takin off their runners up medals in a huff though loved it, good for Unai man. Guy deserves it, proved tonight he IS a good manager, just no suited to English football, which is perfectly fine I missed the first half, but ManU looked shockin from what I seen other than Cavani's goal. Ole taking so long to make substitutes is genuinely baffling to me. I don't get why he waiting till the dying moments of extra time when if Villarreal could actually finish, ManU would've lost. United dominated the 2nd half but did fuck all with it

Edit: Who is ManUs defensive coach btw? Because fuck me they need sacking for the amount of comical set piece goals ManU have conceded this season. No way ManU will challenge City, Liverpool or whoever is goin for the league until they learn how to defend a corner

    Their losers medals you mean!

They’ve had a good year in the league, but in the big games Ole’s lack of managerial skill has done Utd over.

Big congrats to Emery. Thrilled for him. Dude is a quality manager but telling that things were just too fucked at Arsenal. bonus points for a win over United.

    Re: General Football Discussion

Unai Emery once again showng that he IS a good coach. Really stuck it to the British media with that one last night. Well done to him and Villareal, they fully deserved it.

United absolutely bottled it. Only one player turned up for us; Scott McTominay. The rest looked to already be on their holidays. Villareal are a decent side with good players, but at the end of the day they finished 7th in La Liga, a league that heasn't been high in quality this season, and we have superior attacking players. We should have wiped the floor with them and put a few goals past them in the process.

I've seen a lot of stick for David De Gea for his poor showing in the shootout. His record speaks for itself with saving penalties, it's terrible. His own spot kick was weak (not that he's there to score penalties for us). I knew we were losing when it went to penalties.
HOWEVER, there's no way that he should be blamed for losing us the final. The point is that we shouldn't have been in a position where we were relying on a penalty shootout to win us the game. When you get to that stage the odds even out at 50-50, whereas going into the game we were the overwhelming favorites. We failed to deliver during the 90 minutes and the subsequent extra time. Can't blame the goalkeeper for that, our outfield players failed to deliver. But, he will no doubt be made the scapegoat by the plastic, clueless fans. He's still out #1 keeper in my book.

Our attacking players all played absolutely terrible. Rashford had a bad game, Pogpa was also well below average last night I thought. He gave the ball away with wayward passes far too many times for a player of his ability. Fernandes barely got a look in (credit to Villareal for marking him out of the game), Cavani as a result was starved of any decent service. His best work of the game ironically was defensively, apart fromt he goal he scored. Greenwood was ok when he was on the pitch but again wasn't at his best. Not sure why he was withdrawn instead of Rashford though given his recent goalscoring form. He looked the more likely to create something.
Our defense was ok, but we conceded again from a set play. We missed Maguire in that respect as neither Lindeloff or Bailly are vocal leaders on the pitch. Another clear sign that we NEED to sign another CB. We're beign linked heavily with Pau Torres. He was decent last night and I'd take him in a heartbeat, especially for his £50m release clause.

I have faith in Ole, he seems to be right on the cusp of unlocking United's true potential, but let's talk about his game management, or rather, his lack of it. Why was he waiting so long before making substitutions? The players were dead on their feet by the end and we barely threatened in extra time, it was almost as if we were playing for penalties by that point which is ridiculous.
I think I have the answer, as he pretty much answered it post-match. He felt that the players on the pitch gave us the best chance of creating something and winning us the game. What does that tell us? It tells us that basically he doesn't think anybody on the bench had the ability to change the game in our favour. When I saw the bench pre-match the first thing I said to myself was that there was nobody on there who jumped out as players who could be brought on if we needed to change the game in a positive, attacking manner. The options were Dan James, Mata, Diallo and VDB.
James has pace to trouble, but is he the guy you turn to when you are in need of a goal? Mata is quality but again not a quick player who can change the game, and would ahve replaced Bruno. Diallo could have done somethign maybe, he's come off the bench in Europe to devestating effect earlier this season. VDB hasn't had a look in all season, and with his confidence low he wouldn't have done anything. He brought on James deep into extra time and then brought on Mata and Telles in the final seconds for the sole purpose of taking penalties.
What on earth is he thinking? Pogpa and Rashford both should have been withdrawn much earlier in the game, probably in normal time.

Basically, we're lacking strength in depth. It was a clear sign that we need serious investment and upgrades int he summer, or, we need to start properly promoting our top academy players and seriously giving them a shot in the first team. Not just bring them along for the ride to sit on the bench and give a few minutes at the end of the game hear and there.

There's serious work to do in the summer, and as Ole said himself; that result means that this season has not been a successfull one. Such a shame, as it could, or rather should, have been.

Thought Chelsea were fantastic last night and deserved winners. City were off their game, but still Chelsea were impressive in defence and their one on one battles. Kante MOTM but thought James and Chillwell were great too. I’d seriously be thinking of James being a starting RB for England in the euros.

Chelsea out played City in that final. Fair play to them. James was a monster marking Sterling and Kanye was amazing (he's such a fantastic player and human being).
Pep comes up short again, but I think it's odds on that they'll make at least one more final in the next 5 years, IF Pep stays that long.

    Re: General Football Discussion

Is there going to be a Euros Discussion Thread? Now that most squads are confirmed and that we're almost at the start of the tournament it would be good to get it up and running to discuss it a bit! Will make a nice change of pace from club football discussion now that the domestic football season is over.

    Re: General Football Discussion

This is a story that should be wild to me, but isn't at all because I feel like it happens relatively often. Silas Wamangituka, Stuttgart's top scorer last year, revealed to the club that his name and age are both fabricated lies after leaving DR Congo. He's apparently 1 year older than he has said, and his surname is different. Says a Belgian agent who had total control of his money and passports did it. Stuttgart are supporting him coming clean and don't have any intentions of consequencing him.

If the part about his former agent being behind it then fair play for coming clean. Agents like that should be dealt with to the full extent of the law and need to be eradicated from the game.
It is a story that happens far more often than it should though and it's almost exclusively with African players. It's very sad if it's driven by greedy agents.

It happens in Athletics too for a variety of reasons, like being too poor to own any ID for a long time. In running for instance, you can get entered for a "junior" race based on ability, not age.
