Glad someone else agrees that Marlo just plain sucked. Some say he's just stoic, or has an ice cold unemotional sociopath demeanour, but I just see a man not acting and being told to play down every scene.

I don't mind Marlo, but he's less interesting that just about anyone else in the drug trade. Snoop, Chris, Slim, and the other leaders like Prop Joe, Avon and Stringer were all much more interesting characters.

I adore the "my name is my name" scene. One of my favourites in the whole show. It definitely should have been there much earlier and fleshed out a bit.

For me, I'd rank them like this:

Season 4: 10/10, best season of television ever
    Season 2: 9.5/10
    Season 3: 9/10
    Season 1: 9/10
    Season 5: 6.5/10

It makes me kinda glad they stopped the show when they did because there are red flags all over season 5.

Honestly you're not wrong on the rankings, but for me season 1 is the best- hands down. The other seasons all kinda interchange with each watch, but 1 is just a little bit better for me.

The show itself is the greatest and most realistic cop show of all time.

I don't quite get the hate for season 5. As Ed said about the hopelessness, I agree, but that's the point- that is how it is in Baltimore (and all over the US, frankly). I mean the whole concept of faking a serial killer, while a crazy idea, isn't that far fetched when it comes to the laser focus that Jimmy and Lester have towards finally getting a real win over their arch nemesis (which somehow transfers to Marlo, after the death of Stringer) and also with everyone's desperation to get overtime (which is a powerful motivator amongst po-lice).

I think alot of the problem with Marlo was they never humanized him like the did Avon. And also, as I mentioned, the MCU kinda just went "Marlo is our Archnemesis" when in reality it was always Stringer, but with him dead they needed a new #1 target.

Maaaaaaan, just talking about the show makes me feel like it's time for a re-up.

I'll leave you with one of my favorite little Jimmy moments from the show.

Just about in line with my rankings, although I always go back and forth with Season 3 as second-best because of loving Bunny and the Hamsterdam story as a whole.

    Re: Currently Watching - Redux

Finally got round to watching Cruel Summer. Really good show. There's a couple of plot threads that don't make much sense at the end or feel unexplored, but I thought the show did a fantastic job of building intrigue with every episode and portraying most of the characters in positive and negative lights. I liked that the majority of the characters weren't just good people or bad people, but quite grey (with some key exceptions).

Won't spoil for anyone because it's well worth going in blind. I will say that the acting in the show from the entire cast is top notch considering they all have to act essentially three different characters. The lead girls were incredible for that, but particularly Jeanette. Whoever was on hair and makeup for the show deserves a big raise too.

Also Vince is such a likeable character. Refreshing in a show filled with some less than likeable folk.

Currently watching some 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. Such a shame about Sean Lock, fantastic comedian who I've never heard a bad thing said about. Such a loss for UK comedy.

Yeah, really sad to hear about that. Think I was just wondering recently if he’d been on TV lately. I’m suspecting the type of cancer he had was throat, I looked up some recent clips and his voice seemed in rough shape. There’s even an interview on This Morning where he and the hosts are cracking up about his voice breaking and him not being able to speak, which is awkward in hindsight if that’s actually an early sign of something wrong.

A big loss to UK comedy.

Awful news. A great comedian and a huge loss for British comedy.

Giving Animal Kingdom a go. Half way through the first season, enjoying it so far.

Very late to the party, but halfway through The Night Manager and really rating it so far. Hugh Laurie is superb.

May attempt The Bodyguard when I'm finished, but some with Autumn favourites (Bake-Off, Taskmaster) returning imminently, I dunno if I'll get to it.

Bodyguard was excellent, I rate it highly. Night Manager had lots going for it, but I just couldn’t take Hiddleston’s character - it felt too much like he was just Bond.

Funnily, after watching them both if I had to pick a new Bond between these two it would be Richard Madden when he looks a bit older.

    Re: Currently Watching - Redux

New Jake Gyllenhaal film The Guilty came out on Netflix, I forgot I had the Danish original on my list so finally checked that out. Brilliant, stripped-down, contained thriller. Pulls off a great story and character in real time in a single location while all the juicy stuff is only heard over the phone.

Had a quick glance at the new remake and not sure I’ll bother after seeing what looks like depictions of what the main character’s imagining on the other end of the line. It could be an attempt to be different from the original but that just dumbs it down a bit IMO.

I watched the Jake Gyllenhal version at the weekend. Thought it was OK and the story was solid, but it wasn't anything spectacular.

Agreed. Still, Jake acted his socks off as always, and it's definitely the better of the two Antoine Fuqua films to land this past weekend.

First episode of Chucky was a lot of fun. Good homages to the classics. Obviously it was mostly to set up the rest of the series, but I enjoyed the different dynamic they're going for with Chucky and his owner.
