Good result but they'll be annoyed to not have won with the two best chances of the game.

Luke Shaw was fantastic and he has been the last few games as well. Looks like he may finally be back to his best.

Great result for United. Shocking, shocking game though.

Luke Shaw was great yesterday Order, agreed. United are looking decent. Leagues a mess though!

Re: Premier League 2020/21 Discussion Thread

I think everyone's glossing over that the best game of the weekend and the biggest result was Big Sam winning the Black Country Derby . 9 years of waiting for revenge for the 5-1, years of hype about levels and billionaire Chinese owners and the great Nuno taking them to the Europa League quarter finals and they still couldn't avoid losing to us Love it, I've been on a high all weekend. Still a long long way to go to avoid relegation, but at least we showed some fight and bottle this weekend. Snodgrass attitude on his debut already makes him a good addition to the squad, street smart player. West Ham away is gonna be tricky tomorrow night, I was having kittens at every Wolves corner so Soucek to score seems like a good bet tomorrow. Would be delighted to follow up the win with a draw and then to get some new additions in.

As for the Liverpool/Man Utd game, poor show from both teams if they are representing the best this league has to offer. Liverpool have gone off the boil massively this last month to become so goal shy since the Palace romp, and Utd proved themselves to be short of that top quality to be true title contenders. If Bruno can't get his penalty then they always look a little short on goals. Defence has improved though.

I know the title race 'looks' wide open, but at this stage I can't look past Man City. They've got their swagger back.

Damn, Ed. Was pulling for your boys today.

I'm just happy Arsenal aren't getting relegated. Seriously. I have no expectations for the season beyond that. I realize that a couple of wins has put us into the top half and Europe is a possibility now but no use getting hopes up. The fun thing about our recovery these past few weeks is that its large been driven by the young players. Saka has been consistently our best player and Emile Smith-Rowe had been fantastic. Fun thing that we spent 72m on a right winger, then signed an experienced veteran at a big wage and agent fee to play the same position, and are now playing neither because our 19 year old talisman is brilliant there too. Great to see Auba scoring again - I'm sure he was never "not trying", but it sure as fuck looks like that at times.

Its hard to overstate just how terrible of a signing Willian has been for us. Like, immensely bad.

We are better than we were for sure a few weeks ago, and deserved a draw tonight, but you can’t concede 2 goals every game and stay up. We need better CMs.

Man Utd really need to follow up that point at Liverpool with a win tonight. With all these games coming fast I am hoping for a bit of rotation at least.

Jurgen Klopp decides to cure our attacking woes by playing a guy who is only starting his second PL start in 1 year, and a Championship level striker in Origi. Ashley Barnes wins a penalty when he should've been sent off. Trent continues to play like absolute shit, as well as the rest of the side.

We deserve to keep losing at this rate.

Liverpool just couldn't keep it up for the 69...

This season is mad. Six points clear after 19 games is a dream position. City look ominous though.

This season was always going to be a funny one due to the lack of a pre-season and how fast fixtures come around. Liverpool haven't looked at it for a while but it won't take much to spark them back into life. Pep has City looking strong though so I would probably pick them for the title at the moment...unless Man Utd's out of form players hit form and go on a flier.

We're in a fantastic position but we're only at the half way point. City also still have one more game in hand until we're all at a level playing field and I expect them to make it count given that they look to be getting back to their best.
Right now City are definitely the favourites for the title, make no mistake about that. Liverpool need to stop the rot otherwise it's a fight for top 4 given that there's a much bigger group close at the top of the table.

For us, we need to get our top players firing again. Pogpa has hit form and looks close to his best which is great, but Bruno has gone the other way. I know the temptation to keep playing him is large given how talismanic he CAN be but I'd look for an opportunity to play Donny VDB or Mata instead of him for a couple of games. He looks like he just needs a rest. Martial also needs to pick himself up and start scoring again. He looked on fire early season but he's gone off the boil again now.

Re: Premier League 2020/21 Discussion Thread

Good win for The Arsenal yesterday. I wasn't confident going into the match. We lost to Southampton in the FA Cup on the weekend and came into this match missing two of our most important players - Tierney and Aubamayang. then we went down a goal early and it was a definite "I've seen how this plays out" before. But we didn't make ridiculously hard graft of it like we typically do. We fought, we found goals, and we won. What a weird feeling!

I'm still not convinced we push into European spots or anything. We still have some fundamental flaws. And its really obvious when we move away from first choice players, most of our backups are just not good enough. Whether its a lack of fluidity, effort, or tactical issues... there is just a clear drop.

Partey is a monster for us, which shouldn't be that surprising. But a nice by-product is that he seems to make Xhaka more effective. Xhaka is a guy who some love and some hate, but he falls into the middle for me. He has his assets but also his liabilities. He's apparently super-professional in the locker room and his passing can be among the best in the league, but he is extremely lacking in press-resistance and equally lacking in athleticism. He default becomes our passing fulcrum but smart teams will press him and when he loses the ball, we are in trouble - our defense is immediately at risk and Xhaka rarely has the athleticism to recover the ball himself. But Partey is equally capable of being the primary deep passer, meaning Xhaka doesn't get doubled up and he can be more effective. Partey is very press resistant because he has the control and quickness to side step, move the ball and move it on. We've been missing that dynamic in deep midfield since Santi.

Saka is continually our best player. But others have stepped up. Lacazette went 17 months without scoring an away goal and now he's hitting them regularly. Cedric had his first really good EPL performance for us. And Emile Smith-Rowe is key for us, but he's working as hard defensively as he is in attack. Pepe even had some great moments yesterday, including dribbling past 4 Southampton players in one sequence. the funny thing is that Pepe played on the left yesterday. Saka has been so fucking good on the right that Pepe got pushed to the other side.

I have no expectation of a result against United. But if we have Tierney back and hopefully Auba too, at least there is a slim hope.

The minority of idiots need sorting and sorting fast. It is in no way acceptable and I hope the mindless idiots get punished as much as they can be.

As for the performance last night, the less said the better. School boy defending cost us. No defender attacking the ball for the first goal, De Gea not putting his foot through the ball for the second. You can't blame Axel for that deflection, he did what any defender would do in that situation. Ole also has to shoulder some of the blame. He made the wrong changes and the wrong time. Martial was appauling yet he hooked off Greenwood who was the most dangerous looking attacker on the pitch. Cavani and Shaw should have come on at half time. I get players need a break but with how deep Sheff Utd were, Shaw is always more dangerous that Telles who seems to just want to cross instead of taking players on. I get he is a very good crosser and set piece guy but mix it up mun.

Hopefully that is our poor performance out the way so we can beat your lot on Saturday Papa

Well, we've been playing better for relegation fodder, so hard to say how it shapes up. Looks like Auba might still be out but Tierney should be back.

Oh, and I was wrong on my previous comments about Willian. Saw a video him just jogging alongside Pepe in an attacking sequence. Just after he came, Pepe is driving through the middle and Willian should be spring ahead to be a valid passing option but instead she's jogging alongside, 5 yards to the left, making sure he can't be effective. What a fucking waste of wages.

Re: Premier League 2020/21 Discussion Thread

Fairly contended with the 0-0 draw between Arsenal and United. Would have bene amazing to do the double over you guys, especially based on the recent form. But given we ended up missing our 3 best players, I can't complain at all.

I know every match has bad calls, missed calls, etc... but holy fuck is it annoying to see Bruno not even get a yellow for a foul that is not at all very different from what has gotten 2 Arsenal players sent off in the past year. and knowing that if the roles were reversed, Bruno would have been screaming on the ground while Xhaka got a straight red. I can accept it being a yellow and not a red but no card at all feels fucked.

Almost as fucked.... Willian came on at half time and wasn't terrible. Like, he had both a shot and created a chance. The shot was lame and should have been a goal, but given that so many of his performances have literally just been 40 backwards passes and 5 sideways passes, its a big step forward.

Partey looked average after he's been one of our best players since he came back from injury.

Re: Premier League 2020/21 Discussion Thread

So Mustafi is gone. Free transfer to Schalke. Good for him. That means we sent three young players out on loan and brought in one, and let 3 players go for free - Ozil, Sokratis, and Mustafi. While its nice to see overpaid veterans who aren`t contributing much leave, its also concerning that we got nothing for those three. Other clubs wanted them, obviously, and yet we couldn`t leverage that into getting a single peso. Our recruiting was horrible for some time, leading to this problem. But we still have issues as getting rid of players that clubs obviously want shouldn't be as impossible as it seems to be for us. We need to be better at recruitment and Willian makes it very obvious that we are not.

From what I can tell, Rojo had an option year in his contract, so he wasn't definitely leaving on a free in July, while Sokratis, Mustafi, and Ozil were all definitely out of contract, harder to get fees when they simply aren't required to sign the players in six months.
