AEW Dynamite AEW Dynamite On TNT - 03/06/2020

Titles will be up fro grabs on this week's episode of AEW Dynamite. Jungle Boy, after winning a battle royal last week, steps up as the first challenger for Cody's AEW TNT Championship. Will Cody's open challenge back first on the first try or will Cody persevere and who will be the next to step up. Also the AEW Tag Team Championship will be on the line as Kenny Omega and Hangman Page defend against the team of Jimmy Havoc and Kip Sabian. The winner will face Best Friends at Fyter Fest. In other news, after debuting last week, FTR have agreed to a sit down interview Tony Schiavone explaining their sudden arrival and their future plans. Chris Jericho is in action against Colt Cabana but what else does Jericho have to say regarding last week's fight between him plus the rest of Inner Circle against Mike Tyson and his entourage?

Alright show. My favorite part of AEW has been how much they work to weave in a lot of different stories into short spaces and it doesn't feel overdone.

Jericho has something going on with Tyson, Cassidy & briefly with Cabana
PP + Janela vs. Bucks + Hardy resulted in Hardy Party, Bucks vs. FTR, FTR vs. Butcher & Blade.

It really feels like the whole company is interacting with each other as opposed to everyone living in a bubble.

Most of the show wrestling wise wasn't very thrilling though. Main event completely pulled me out of it when Cody started blading, and I was surprised MJF/Wardlow did not get involved in a physical fashion. Cody's very hit & miss I imagine, but I cant see him being more hit than miss if he's doing the TNT challenge weekly. Even so, I love the concept of a title defended weekly and I would love it if it stuck around long term as opposed to being a short term thing they do.

Besides the wrestling not being up to par for me yet, the other knock Ive got on AEW is the amount of mistakes they make on commentary. Commentary is pretty rancid.

    EDIT: Also not enough women

I think as Dynamites go this is on the lesser side of the scale because the matches weren't particularly outstanding and I thought the show was a bit heavy on flashbacks and video packages. The best match of the night was probably the opener but giving Havoc a great deal of slow heel control offense isn't the best cocktail for a great tag match and it showed. The main event was decent and I'll give it credit for just propping up Jungle Boy some more but Cody's blood did feel unnecessary and over-the-top and honestly just detracted from the match for me. Why would you blow a heavy blood spot on a friendly face versus face match? Just feels edgy for the sake of it. The other matches were nothing special.

Segments are where this show came to life. The FTR promo I thought was immaculate, with each guy coming across perfectly and quickly establishing them as these collected tweeners. Taz and Mox trading a few barbs was a welcome and easy way to build to the title match in a month.

Was the first one I've caught live in quite some time and found the show lagged a bit overall without a good match and with a lot of repetition, but even a subpar Dynamite is a generally entertaining watch.

Is it just me, or is the TNT title starting to grow on anyone else? Belt looked good on Cody.

Cassidy and Jericho still need to finish the show but that bit was brilliant.

Another decent show. Nothing blew me away but nothing offended me either. They built up some matches well. Orange Cassidy vs Jericho should be interesting. A good placeholder feud for the Tyson stuff. Best Friends vs Omega/Page should be good at Fyter Fest. It seems like Cage is focusing on being a power guy rather than his usual routine which might be for the best. Moxley being man-handled is something that I can't picture in my head. Cody vs Jungle Boy was okay. Left no real impact on me. Although Cody having pyro for his victory left me in stiches. A bit OTT.

Britt Baker is growing into one the best characters on the show. Every time she’s on tv now she’s hitting it out of the park. Her wrestling I’m sure will catch up when she’s back into the swing of things. Orange Cassidy coming out when Jericho wanted Tyson was hilarious. The opening bout was really good. The main event felt somewhat flat for me when I had high hopes with this one.

Cody is growing into one of my least favorite acts. He needs to cut the shit with trying to force everything he does to make each match a "classic moment." He's doing it with pretty much every feud and every match he has, and it's really grating.

This week wasn't even the stupid blade job for me that was the worst. It's the fact that he goes through a table from the top to the outside, with Jungle Boy going on top of him, being the first one up out of the spot, it being no sold whatsoever, and Cody rushing right to a finish. It's like he pretty much had to have the table spot just to make it a big spectacle, but all it did was take me right out of the match for how groan inducing it was.

The problem is though, it's becoming a very obvious pattern. Forcing the stipulation for the Jericho match so early, rushing the MJF betrayal for the big moment, the overbooked shit in both the last Allin match and then with Archer, and now again. It's just so much, all the time

Agreed on the table spot. It was badly executed in every possible way. Boring bump. He got up first. No sold. He dragged down Jungle Boy in this match while probably thinking he was going to be elevating him or further helping him get established.

Think he's going to be very hit & miss - probably more miss. He leans a bit too much the Triple H route for my liking in terms of perhaps not having a solid outsider's perspective to bring him down to earth when he thinks hes better than he actually is. But it's also his ego and self-confidence that got him this far so what can I say.

I'm just imagining Jungle Boy eager to learn from the 14 year vet Cody about in-ring storytelling, only to be told the plan is for Cody to get colour on free TV in a spot where it's his own fault and they're both taking a table bump because underdog Jungle Boy is suddenly such a threat to Cody's reign he has to resort to weapons and considers whipping him with his belt.

They're definitely planting seeds for a heel turn, but it's way too soon.

It was pretty much classic Cody. Big picture spots but lacks depth past that.

No clue why they are trying to hint a heel turn. Way too early. There is loads of steam left in face Cody. He still needs to finish up the MJF feud.

Re: AEW Dynamite On TNT - 03/06/2020

I dont mind the narrative so much. I bought it as Cody Rhodes being determined to a) put on a show as TNT champion b) not letting his opponents be complacent. So even though he was facing an upstart like Jungle Boy, he was forcing Jungle Boy to up his intensity. I can see heel seeds being planted but to me it was just Cody trying to reinforce his "locker room leader" character. It feels like he's trying to outdo what Cena did with the US title so many years ago.
