Backlash 2 WWE Backlash 2020 Discussion

    Previously, on Backlash:
    - It was all downhill after Seth Rollins vs The Miz.
    - Nia Jax cut a body-positive after-school anti-bully speech, and got boo'd so hard her random heel turn a few months later seemed like a mercy.
    - Aiden English & Elias finally had a segment together, but they didn't perform a boardwalk musical duet about how much everyone around them sucks, so really it never happened.
    - Carmella beat Charlotte clean-ish. No snark, I'm just as surprised as you are.
    - Colin Cassidy as a solo act was a thing, a thing that swiftly tapped out to Daniel Bryan.
    - AJ Styles & Shinsuke Nakamura kicked each other in the balls so hard both of them called it quits for the night. Neither started wearing a cup.
    - Roman Reigns faced Samoa Joe in an 18-minute headlock war that somehow main evented over the WWE Championship.

What's WWE's fascination with constantly changing the PPV schedule? How is anyone supposed to remember when PPVs took place when there's one off PPVs, PPVs disappear before returning, and PPVs switching months?

I'm going to sound like a grumpy old man but Backlash is an April ppv and any other month feels weird.

I might have to rewatch that Joe vs Reigns match for my thread.

    Re: WWE Backlash 2020 Discussion

I remember last year that San Diego was supposed to get Backlash, but ultimately it got cut because from what I read it had something to do with the Saudi show they had around this time last year. I think it was because they were happening too close to each other so Backlash got dropped, and we got a house show instead which was fun but I’m still low key sore about that

I remember that! What an odd storyline that had little explanation.

To be fair, Brock was the champ. You surely don't expect him to appear on a second rate PPV card so soon after a Saudi show? If I recall correctly, there was a Saudi show with Brock/Reigns like a week before.

In a sense, why does it matter? If you watch WWE, you know when the PPVs are gonna happen. Is there anyone out there who isn't following this shit who is going to have some sort of vested interest in Backlash, just cause it's Backlash? They've kept the important ones in the same place at least, cause I can see some lapsed fans coming back to check for Mania or SummerSlam.

From a marketing perspective, having the same PPVs yearly at the same time provokes a sense of familiarity and comfort for long-term fans. It's something to look forward to ("Hey, it's October. HIAC is this month!).

For casual fans, it doesn't really matter I suppose. It gives the booking team more ability to do whatever they want and book on the fly. ("Hey, ratings are down. Let's do HIAC next month!")

That's fair enough. I would like for them to stick to a routine too, for what it's worth. I'm not sure what they gain by switching up the schedule every year, but that could just be another product of Vince's indecisiveness.

Personally, I'd much prefer the 2000 PPV schedule to the 2020 PPV schedule. The sooner they kill off gimmick PPVs, the better.

TBH, after cannibalising their own PPV business, I'm surprised they bother with much outside of the Big 4. They could easily have fewer big shows and simply have more happen on TV, since that's where the money is these days.

I became a fan in 2002 and stuck with the product religiously until around 2012. I've watched on-and-off since 2016 but have been watching more during lockdown (I hate the empty crowd shows!).

Isn't it interesting to note that viewership and PPV numbers have dwindled massively since they introduced the gimmick branded PPVs? I guess they based their decision on the idea that there were more casual fans who were likely to buy the PPV/subscribe to the network to see HIAC/Extreme Rules than because their feuds were culminating.

I can't stop humming it. I'm all in on Miz and Morrison winning tonight now. Sadly it's going to be a squash isn't it?

Enjoyed the Kickoff match between Apollo and Andrade. Would happily watch them have a series of matches together. Something very fitting about Apollo Crews holding the US Title atm with everything that's going on in the world.

I as well enjoyed the kick off match. Apollo Crews is pretty decent and I’m enjoying his reign. My girl Sasha and that thing she calls a partner winning made me happy as well.
