Then they would have bought WCW!

God I dont know if Kevin Nash's knees could even wrestle for 45+ mins in Tokyo Dome.

Tbh if NJPW bought WCW prob have same affect as wwe buy out top guys stay out and the undercard try to do something in the end I dont think it makes much difference.

    Spoiler:

I was originally thinking about whether or not NJPW were even in strong enough health to buy WCW at that point in time. Although I believe this was a couple of years before everything went downhill hard for NJPW. Then again, considering what a crazy low price McMahon had to pay to get WCW, I imagine most companies could have sorted out a way to buy WCW. Even if NJPW were to buy WCW, what then? They don't have any TV deals in America. You could argue that the WCW name had more drawing power in America than NJPW, but I don't believe they had much interest in the idea of expanding.

So what if NJPW bought WCW? Chances are, it would have just been a giant waste of money and New Japan would have sold the library to the WWE at some point.

Kevin Nash did work the Tokyo Dome once.

I know this post was made in jest, but back then would have been a fine time for Nash to head to NJPW. You didn't have really long matches in New Japan then.

Yeah I'd like to give you a scenario but really I just don't see WHY they would and so I can't really think of what they do if they had bought it. Either way, like Jim said, I'm sure WWE would have obtained the video library and several of the trademarks by now.

You mean Norton and he was actually champion for like a month in 2001. Along with Kensuke Sasaki and Kazuyuki Fujita. Neither would ever work 45 minute main events

If New Japan bought WCW, they'd probably just buy some of their wrestlers and released the rest. And maybe buy their archive like Jim said

Muta was there for a little while longer. After Misawa and company left AJPW to create NOAH, Muta basically went to All Japan to help out. That may be more 2002 though.

At that point in time, you had Norton, Kojima, Tenzan, Manabu Nakanishi, Scott Hall, Kensuke Sasaki, Yuji Nagata, and Chono. There were also some really young guys by the names of Shibata and Tanahashi.

Re: What if NJPW bought wcw?

Question that, sadly, will never be answered.

The only thing I know is that a lot of the match quality (especially in many of the top matches) and storylines would have been way better and, most importantly, coherent.

Would it have saved WCW? Maybe not. It would have taken quite a bit of time before a turnaround occured and Jamie Kellner, then the TV boss if the network, didn't have the patience for it, especially on the major money loss side.

Might have survived if another network was willing to gamble and pick it up at the time. And it would probably have been seriously scaled down production values-wise.

    Just my 2 cents.
