SD Live WWE Friday Night Smackdown Live Discussion - November 1, 2019

    Friday Night Smackdown Preview
    November 1, 2019

WWE plane held in Saudi Arabia, many wrestlers to miss Smackdown

WWE's charter plane bound for the United States was held in Saudi Arabia for several hours on Thursday, WWE confirmed.

The delay thrusts Friday's "SmackDown" show into turmoil, as many of the wrestlers who appeared at Thursday's "Crown Jewel" show in Riyadh were also slated to perform Friday on SmackDown in Buffalo.

WWE said the delay was "due to several aircraft problems including mechanical issues." Dave Meltzer reported Friday morning on his Wrestling Observer Radio show, however, that the holdup was not due to weather or a mechanical issue with the plane. Meltzer added on Twitter that "WWE had a problem in Saudi Arabia."

Of the 175 people WWE brought to Saudi Arabia for Thursday's event, 12 were able to get out on a second charter flight. The rest remained on the plane for more than six hours before heading to hotels.

The second flight carried "top talent" in hopes of making it to Buffalo in time for SmackDown, Pro Wrestling Sheet's Ryan Satin reported, but WWE confirmed that it will not complete the 14-hour trip in time for the 8 p.m. ET show.

WWE had announced three matches for SmackDown before the delay: Roman Reigns vs. King Corbin, The Revival vs. The New Day and a six-woman tag team match. The women did not make the trip to Saudi Arabia but the six men in the other two matches all appeared at Crown Jewel. A "MizTV" segment with Bray Wyatt—who was in Riyadh—was also advertised.

It remains to be seen how WWE will fill a two-hour show without a significant portion of its roster.

WWE says the rest of the traveling party will leave on another plane Friday night.

    - Sports Illustrated

Yeah so WWE still doesn't have a preview up for Smackdown so for now... we speculate wildly as to what will happen in the wake of this Saudi Arabia ordeal. Bring on 60 minutes of Daniel Bryan baby!

If ever there was an opportunity to put on an all women's show, this is it. If they thought in their feet they'd just do a Smackdown special and do it all female.

I think that would be a solid idea. At the same time, critics would complain that they only did it because they had no other choice and it would also draw attention to the fact they are seemingly not doing another Evolution PPV this year. Which is a shame really, because even if you just do it as a Network special like Smackville or Starrcade, that's at least better than completely canning it.

Brock quits SD well I suppose that's how they sort out the title situation but what's Fox gonna make of all that with the ratings struggling

Pretty cool that Triple H and NXT sponsored HBK are there, on the same night most of the stars are stranded in Blood Money country. Convenient!

Anyway, I had some curiosity in this show with the talent being unavailable and had a passing interest in what would be served up. A Heyman promo which consisted of 80% Blood Money footage, and literally nothing else being advertised for tonight outside of the women’s title, just made my decision for me. Bed time.

Who'd have thunk your show could be better when put together on the spot, and the majority of your roster isn't there?

Booking on the fly...loosen the reins a little bit...the show may be more interesting.

Nothing can stop the fiend, except a mechanical problem on a plane

Riddle's charisma jumps off the page. It's a shame his debut moment is in a weird tag team spot, but he should be on the main roster today.

    Oh hey Ciampa.

Re: WWE Friday Night Smackdown Live Discussion - November 1, 2019

A lot of the NXT involvement was of course very forced and pretty one note. Can't really bash that because there was no way it wouldn't be. But eh... it was a pretty mixed bag for me.

Baszler laying everyone out did nothing for me. I'm not fond of her anyways but regardless of that, the angle was just dry as fuck. She shows up, attacks everyone, doesn't really do anything impressive or particularly vicious looking, and leaves. It lacked a real impact in my opinion. If nothing else, I would have liked a bit of mic time for Shayna to put over the impending invasion or build up Survivor Series at least. Same goes for Bianca Belair jumping Dana and Carmella. I hope I'm not the only one who peeped Carmella totally half ass selling the attack when she was leaning against the crate. Like I was seriously wondering if she was supposed to be hurt or if she was just sad that Bianca was beating up Dana.

I had to roll my eyes at Riddle and Lee pounding Zayn. I'm sure the casual audience gets a real chuckle out of seeing Zayn constantly get his ass beat, but it ain't for me. Zayn's acting was fantastic but man I'm tired of him being the company punching bag. I could say the same for The Miz but at least in Miz's case, despite the fact he takes a lot of defeats, he pretty much always looks like a legit competitor in doing so. I'd love to think Zayn (or The Miz) will eventually get to reap the benefits of putting everyone over but yeah... don't see that happening. And for what it's worth I don't feel like a two on one beatdown on the biggest geek on the roster does a lot to present Riddle and Lee as legit as they actually are either so that was just an all around bust for me.

I also thought Miz announcing that Bray couldn't make it tonight was funny in an off kilter way. Like, the thought of this supernatural abomination being stranded at the airport with the likes of Heavy Machinery and Drake Maverick is just hilarious.

I really enjoyed the main event though. Bryan, to me, carried the thing. What a ring general. Cole played his part well too, though. Quite honestly though, Bryan taking a clean loss brought it down for me. NXT literally swept the whole night and did so with ease, I might add. That doesn't really sit well with me despite the fact that I love NXT. I found it really funny though that on commentary Pat McAfee said the Performance Center makes incredible superstars. Look, there have been some wrestlers who started from nothing in the PC and have become solid stars but a vast majority of your best wrestlers in the NXT era were built on the indie scene and I'd say more often than not, they end up watered down when they make it on WWE TV. But nonetheless. Entertaining main event and I think it laid the foundation for Daniel Bryan to captain a team of WWE guys against a team of NXT guys lead by Triple H. At least that's what I'm assuming. And on that note, Triple H's promo made it sound like it would NXT vs. Raw AND Smackdown collectively. But I've been thinking it was NXT vs. Raw vs. Smackdown. So which is it because it's really not clear to me at the moment?

All in all, I have to say, I wish I would have enjoyed this show more. An NXT invasion is some fantasy booking type shit but they obviously just had to throw everything together at the last moment and because of that I feel like we blew what should have been a landmark occasion on this half baked show. The main event match up is really the only part of this show that I felt delivered and made for compelling TV. I guess they at least tried with Miz vs. Ciampa but it was average at best and really means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Everything else was just generic as possible.

Re: WWE Friday Night Smackdown Live Discussion - November 1, 2019

I feel this was always going to happen for Survivor Series and they just moved it forward by a show or 2 because of the Saudi issues and thought it was very well done.

Its a shame thought all the NXT stuff happened after Lesnar had left for the night, really wanted to see Riddle confront Lesnar but there we go.

Enjoyed just about all of it except the Basler segment as i just don't get her hype, shes another MMA fighter who has 0 personality, her matches are all the same and so are her promos and shes improved somewhat in ring but not enough to have held that belt for as long as she has especially over some of the talent shes come up against.

Will actually be looking forward to RAW and to see what happens when the main guys aren't stranded in a foreign country. NXT should also be good if they play it right and again have an invasion of their own.

Re: WWE Friday Night Smackdown Live Discussion - November 1, 2019

Yeah I'm closer to EC's thoughts than others here. If you watch wrestling to switch your brain off and are easily impressed with shiny new toys, then this episode will be right up your street because they just threw new wrestlers at it without explaining what their characters were and who is baby or heel and hoped it worked. This is WWE's emergency button every time they panic, just throw more NXT names onto the show without explaining anything and then a week later the main event stink gets on them and no-one cares. I heavily criticized that episode earlier in the year when Gargano, Ciampa, Black and Ricochet randomly showed up because they weren't addressing their booking at all, they just did the same old shit with new wrestlers. As Smithers would say 'but they got a new hat'. I know they did well under the circumstances, but I'd be a hypocrite to say this was a great show.

We're two days removed from the NXT roster ripping each other apart as two war games matches are supposedly set up, and now they're on Smackdown as a united force because all of a sudden brand supremacy matters more than their beef on their own TV show. I don't need to see Cole and Ciampa and Shayna and Rhea all standing in a line like they've forgotten what they were fighting about days ago. It's poor planning from WWE's part to be introducing NXT in the brands fight each other PPV at the same time you're running your Takeover with the big division wide feuds going on. Oh yes and of course daddy Triple H has to be the one to give the WE ARE NXT promo because he's bigger than anyone on his brand. Can't trust the champions to deliver it.

I know she's not a good wrestler, but I feel for someone like Dana Brook who originally had a match this week, and was at the arena, but she got her match cancelled because they went with the NXT invasion instead. The NXT guys won't be on this show in a months time so I really wouldn't be doing NXT beats up everyone on Smackdown again.

As an episode itself it was pretty solid. It was nice to see something different for a change.

That being said I’m totally with EC and Ed on this one and it’s one of my biggest gripes with the Survivor Series period. The very lazy WWE creative seemingly become even more lazy and just roll with BRAND SUPREMACY and it just never makes any sense.

War Games is just around the corner and everyone is literally tearing each other apart during the weekly NXT shows. How they plan to go from that to brand unity at survivor series within 24 hours is beyond me. It’s just pure laziness.

Ciamppa did not forget about his beef with Cole. He was staring him down for the entirety of HHH's promo

Pretty solid show, enjoyed how they did this NXT invasion.

Bryan and Cole was real good, and Bayley vs Cross was pretty good too imo.

This was actually the first Smackdown I've enjoyed since it moved to FOX.

It was really refreshing and it came as a surprise to me. I was expecting a heavy Women's show and I would have been fine with that too- but this was really fun!

Bryan vs Adam Cole BAY-BAY! Great match. I thought they might have gone with a DQ though and had neither take a clean loss but Cole beating D-Bryan is HUGE! Great moment for him.

Shayna's debut was cool. Ciampa's was a bit of a miss for me.

I loved the interaction with Riddle, Lee & Sami Zayn Haha!

Visually I loved HBK & Triple H leading this NXT Invasion and I'm excited to see the next Raw now so I guess it's job done.

Like everyone else, This was the first SmackDown I've enjoyed in a long while. Everybody has wanted an NXT invasion angle, hopefully when all the talent DOES come back to SmackDown they don't ruin everything they built this week.
