WC Decides: The Greatest Premier League Team - The Right Winger

WC Decides: The Greatest Premier League Team - The Right Winger

Every Saturday a new thread will be posted and open for the week to discuss the best in that particular position(s). Then I will post the results here before opening up the next position.

    The Team So Far:

    --- Peter Schmeichel ---
-- Gary Neville -- John Terry -- Rio Ferdinand -- Ashley Cole --
    --- x ---- x --- x ---- x ----
    ---- ---- x ---- x ---- -----

    On to the discussion.

We've got our backline sorted, now it's time to start moving forward. The Right Winger can cover a lot of ground. Whether it's a defensive or more conservative winger, a traditional quick wide man, or an inside forward who is more ready to cut inside than hug the touchline. In recent years we've seen right wingers that are more like another striker rather than the wide midfielders we saw in the early years of the Premier League, but who takes your preference?

Please vote with your top three Premier League Right Wingers in history via PM to me by 5.00PM GMT on Saturday 5th October. E.G:

    1- Bebe (3 Points)
    2- Antonio Nunez (2 Points)
3- Andy Van Der Meyde (1 Point)

Also use this thread to pitch who you think is the best, or who deserves to be in the discussion.

So we have Beckham and Ronaldo for starters, then throw in Pires and Robben who played on both flanks to be considered too. From an underrated standpoint there's Nobby Solano too.

My #1 and #2 are sorted, need to find an option for #3 as there are so many possibilities.

Pires was more of a left winger. I know he would play both flanks, but I think he's in the LW discussion, not this one. Ljunberg would be in this one.

For me it's difficult to look past Ronaldo. I know Beckham was in the league for longer and was world class in his own right. But from the first season Ronaldo joined as an 18 year old, he was already very good. By the time the 2006/2007 season came along he was world class and the best player in the league by some distance. In 07/08 he had one of the greatest all time Premier League seasons which is something that I think is very important to consider in this list. Even in Beckham's best season, he doesn't touch Ronaldo's 07/08 (and there's not many player in any position that do). Even Mo Salah's mega season is only slightly better than Ronaldo's 07/08 from a goalscoring perspective, and I'd argue that Ronaldo's all round game was much better. Now think that Ronaldo has that under his belt, and three other phenomenal seasons and a couple of really good ones.

Beckham is a clear number two for me. One of the all time great passers, a work horse on the pitch and a clutch big game player.

For my third place vote I'm kind of torn but I'm leading towards Raheem. It's easy to forget he's been around for 7 years now, and has been used mostly as a right winger up until the start of this season. His season last year was amazing as he was the best attacking player in the league, and he has been at the very least very good for 5 years now - even going back to his breakthrough season with Suarez and Sturridge.

Re: WC Decides: The Greatest Premier League Team - The Right Winger

#1 is Beckham to me because he's who I instinctively think of in that position. One of the best set piece takers and crossers of the ball ever in the PL (few more years of KDB might change that), had a great partnership with his RB, big part of a 6 times title winning team. I think only players with a lot more appearances than him (Lamps, Gerrard Rooney, Cesc, Giggs etc) have more all time assists in the league, but he wasn't goal shy either. If FPL was a thing in the 90s, he'd of been pretty hard to leave out.

I maybe wrong, but it didn't feel like Ronaldo was playing on the right so much in his last few years at Utd, I remember him being up top at times. He's clearly number 2, but I can't put him over Beckham for this position.

However on the Beckham/Ronaldo front, I think my age contributes to my opinion because I don't remember early Beckham week to week, but I do remember early Ronaldo week to week and how he was very talented but wasn't the effective CR7 demon he'd become a few years later.

No-one really springs to mind for my #3 and I think that's partly to do with how fluid wingers have become in the modern game because you mention Sterling, Shock, but he has played all over the top three positions for Pep, so again he doesn't stand out as much as he should do in my head.

I think for guys who are fluid in positions like Raheem, Ronaldo, Salah, I think they should be judged on the position they were most famous for playing in. Otherwise you could have a host of incredible players that won't make the cut because they're too versatile. Ronaldo was definitely a right winger primarily for Man Utd, even if he would sometimes pop up up front or on the left. I'd say at least 90% of his and Raheem's play time in the Prem was on the right flank.

Re: WC Decides: The Greatest Premier League Team - The Right Winger

As much as I love Beckham- It's got to be Ronaldo! <3

So that's my first two picks selected. 3rd is rather tricky though- nobody instantly standing out to be honest.

I did like Ljunberg so he could be an option. Others in my thoughts are Steve Mcmanman and then a couple of United boys in Kanchelskis, Nani and even Valencia Haha!

Perhaps a couple more not so obvious for me would be Solano, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Robben. Robben just didn't play in the prem long enough for me to get him in that top three.

I agree with the names mentioned. Ronaldo and Beckham are easily the top 2. Although I lean towards Ronaldo for #1.

Re: WC Decides: The Greatest Premier League Team - The Right Winger

Thanks to the following voters who chimed in to the greatest right winger list: Chaddes, PS, Ed, MC 16, Deco90, Baldrick, Wolf Beast, Shock

    The Honourable Mentions:

    Mo Salah - 1 Point
    Riyad Mahrez - 1 Point
    Nolberto Solano - 1 Point
    Freddie Ljunberg - 2 Points

Similar to the left back list, it’s not the most diverse list of players, mostly due to the top 2 being so dominant. However what we’ve got is some terrific players. Of course, as a Newcastle fan I’m chuffed to see Nobby Solano on the list as he deserves a mention. I didn’t vote for him, I sent my third vote to a man with one of the greatest seasons in Premier League history. Not Mo Salah, Riyad Mahrez, whose 2015-2016 season stands out as one of the great individual seasons. Salah, of course, had his historic season too. Freddie Ljunberg rounds out the honourable mentions, as a key member of the invincibles.

    Third Place

    Raheem Sterling - 5 Points

Not too far ahead of the honourable mentions, but Sterling’s recent successes, plus his time with Liverpool, was enough to give him the third place on the list.

    Second Place

    David Beckham - 15 Points

Arguably the most recognisable footballer of all time, and the man in English football for nearly a decade. Beckham was one of the greatest passers of all time, with his relative lack of pace (for a winger) being compensated by some mouthwatering crosses. Also a set piece specialist whose corners and freekicks often decided tight games.

    First Place

    Cristiano Ronaldo - 23 Points

After Beckham came Ronaldo, who filled the iconic number 7 role of Manchester United and ushered in a new era of dominance in the late 00s. Following the World Cup in 2006, he had established himself as a world class talent and one of the top footballers in the world. His 2007/2008 season stands out as one of the best individual seasons of a footballer in Premier League history.

    The Team So Far:

    --- Peter Schmeichel ---
--- Gary Neville ---- John Terry --- Rio Ferdinand ---- Ashley Cole ----
    --- Cristiano Ronaldo ---- x --- x ---- x ----
    ---- ---- x ---- x ---- -----

Next part we'll be looking for the best Central Midfielders in Premier League history. Thread to be posted soon.
