It will be a rollercoster that's for sure. At least it's more entertaining than the title race.....

Re: Premier League 2019/2020 Discussion Thread

The race for Europe is absolutely going to be interesting this year. And mostly because every team is flawed rather than every team is awesome lol

I'm not sure the "mentally weak" label still fully applies to Arsenal. We aren't bastions of mental fortitude or anything. But giving up an early goal on stupid defending would have folded this team not that long ago. Under peak EmeryBall, you could literally see the players fall to pieces at the first piece of adversity put in front of them. We don't do that anymore, not really. So while mentality and determination probably isn't an outright strength yet, its also not as much of an overt weakness.

Similar with our defensive issues. Not gone. Still have an idiot moment in us or two. But better. Arteta has been in charge for 12 matches and we have 6 clean sheets in that time. Obviously some of those were against "lesser" opponents.... but we weren't keeping those opponents out before. "Defensive specialist" Jose has something like 3 clean sheets with Tottneham so far over a longer period of time. So while still not ideal at the Emirates.... its getting better.

Just happy to get another result yesterday. It wasn't the prettiest win, although the goals were pretty slick. I still don't fully understand the Calvert-Lewin goal. I mean, Mina pushing Kolasinac backwards seemed a bit weird and then Luiz getting booted in the head on the goal.... seems like the kind of goal that usually won't stand, despite it being quite a pretty finish from Calvert-Lewin. But we definitely don't get the rub of the refs, so I guess its par for the course. Nketiah took his finish nicely, and Abua is now joint top scorer. Despite playing the entire season out of position. Not bad, I guess.

Well we can thank Fabianski for playing like Martin did when he was out injured, because otherwise West Ham would've won this. Liverpool played fucking terrible in many parts of the game, and were let off by Fabianski being responsible for all 3 goals. We picked up the tempo really well when we went behind, but wouldn't have scored if not for the shambolic errors by Fabianski. And Alisson coming up huge - again - when Robbo decided not to track Bowen.

If the gap between City and Liverpool was smaller I'd say something like 'it's Liverpools year' to fluke a comeback like that, but that phrase lost all meaning months ago when this title race stopped being a race.

Hope they break the record, phenomenal team. Gotta savour this before I turn on them and start hating the level of success they are getting.

I'm actually long past caring if Liverpool win the title, given that it has been a damn near locked in certainty since Christmas. I do however, want them to lose one match so they don't finish the season undefeated.

It's going to happen, Liverpool aren't unbeatable, Atletico and Napoli proved that, and they got SUPER lucky against West Ham. There's been too many cases of them ALMOST being caught (Norwich away, ManU old trafford, Watford, West Ham). Plus I can see them after they win the league just chucking out the youth if they get past Atletico and go deep in the CL

I don't think they'll go undefeated either, but I don't think the fact that they have been lucky matters. Every team with this kind of record would have had to rely on fortune and grinding out results in bad games

Look at the Invincibles, that record only exists because the team got fortunate (the most famous examples being against Portsmouth and at Man Utd that season). That's not to discredit the Invincibles, but any team looking to go undefeated for a season will have bad performances and need to rely on luck more than once.

If Liverpool are all in the UCL and unbeaten in the league, they will keep going for both. Those players ABSOLUTELY will want to be Invincible. I don't think it will happen - I think City beat us - especially since we've been VERY poor, ironically since the winter break. Trent, Robbo, and the forwards have all played A LOT of football this year, and it shows.

3-0 now to Watford. Going to take a miracle comeback in the last 20 minutes for Liverpool to hang onto the undefeated record.

This is an absolutely deserved result. Liverpool haven't played well for a month now. Lovren showed he should probably never play for the club again, VVD has been incredibly lazy, Salah has looked out of form for a while. They're clearly tired, complacent, and a little arrogant. They deserve to get kicked in the face for it

Biggest win of the last few seasons, really. I had just accepted the Liverpool drive towards 50 as inevitable, so this is nice.

7 points separating 8 teams, heck Arsenal are only 10 poins off being in the relegation places.

So the streak is over for Liverpool, was it 5 games short of Arsena's unbeaten run? Not that it matters to them anyway, being 22 points ahead and all that, they'll still be walking to the title.

With other results going their way a Man Utd win tomorrow would be huge. Would take us to 1 point behind 4th and only err 6 behind 3rd so with a win it brings the battle for European places to being as interesting as the relegation battle.

Meh. Totally didn’t expect us to go undefeated all season and don’t really care that we didn’t as long as we win the league.

That being said. That was a pretty poor performance all around from us today. From the moment I saw Lovren on the team sheet I had an iffy feeling about this game, someone on reddit put it perfectly in that he’s like a Karius or a Moreno. He may not cause us to lose a game directly(although I totally blame the 1st goal
on him) but his presence just doesn’t give you comfort or confidence that you would normally have and I feel that was the case today.

Gomez/Van Dijk and Matip/Van Dijk are so comfortable as a team that Robbo and Trent are able to just go up and play their game without having to worry too much about constantly defending. Without that comfort it meant they had to be more on guard defensively and so couldn’t play their normal game. The moment they did we got caught out and again Van Dijk didn’t have they comfort he normally has and also kept getting caught out. Hopefully we sell him in the summer.

We also missed Hendo and Milner a today. Once Watford scored it felt like there was no one there to lift the team.

On the bright side I’m glad we don’t have the pressure of going undefeated anymore. Hopefully we can win the league early and let some of the young guys get some game time while we focus on the FA cup and Champo League (assuming we remain in those when it comes)

So kinda hard to know how much to read into Liverpool's loss against Watford. I mean, its just one loss. Going through a season undefeated is incredibly difficult which is why its so rare (despite how some people try to downplay The Invincibles doing it). At some point, you have an off day or the luck goes against you or there is a shit ref decision and you lose one.

The FA Cup loss to Chelsea doesn't necessarily reflect all that much against Liverpool's league form either.

They play Bournemouth early on Saturday and if there is a "formula" to beating Liverpool now - low block, defend hard, counter fast - I'm not sure the Cherries are a team to make that work regardless.

Tottenham at Burnley is the late match on Saturday. the Battle of who can Have the Lower of Low Blocks. Should be fantastic viewing.

    One down CGS

It's impossible to avoid hyperbole during a season like the one Liverpool have and the way social media, journalists and pundits work these days to clickbait interactions from fans, but this week has been a clear lesson to wait until a season is over before having the greatest team ever debate. Not that I think an FA Cup failure means too much because Klopp literally didn't give a fuck about the domestic trophies and wasn't playing the first team, but if they were to not advance past Athletico that will take a little shine off the season.

The very greatest teams fight on all fronts. Its what makes a treble so special.

Liverpool just don't have that strength in depth.
