    Re: NJPW G1 CLIMAX 29

Did my VOW G1 pick ems today and ended up with a Ibushi/Naito final. My gut this whole time is that we'd have a Tanahashi/Naito final but it became too hard to reach that when I started planning everything out.

I'm calling a Tanahashi vs Naito too but I do think there are other possilities.

    Re: NJPW G1 CLIMAX 29

I went with Ibushi/Naito, think Tana/Naito has more value in the immediate future because they have ran Ibushi/Naito to death this year and with the final sold out Tana would probably be a better choice to push back until 2020. But I could see Tana winning A Block too. KENTA is a dark horse, I've cooled off on Will for the time being but think he could get a big win or 2.

Matches I think are good results for storyline purposes:

I think one of Juice or Goto gets a win over Naito to defend the briefcase. (Likely Goto since that's his spot most years and he has a virtual assured win over Jay Night 1. But it's Goto so you never know.)
KENTA beats Ibushi Night 1 and he's my pick over Okada to get the October title shot.
Could see Zack or Will get a win over Okada to do a title shot but IMO people worked themselves into a shoot over Royal Quest, it took the US forever to get a title shot, and I doubt they'd give it away so soon for the UK.
    Ibushi beats Will
    Juice beats Mox
SANADA or Will get a win/draw over Okada to advance their stories
Think Archer and Fale both beat Will and get wins back
    EVIL over ZSJ
    Tana over SANADA
    Taichi over Ishii

    Re: NJPW G1 CLIMAX 29

With KENTA, I'm with you that I think he's going to be booked well and score a lot of wins, but that final night of matches pretty much rules it out for me that he can make the final. There's no way that KENTA Vs Zack is going on after Tanahashi Vs Ospreay or Ibushi Vs Okada (in fact they have KENTA down as the first match that night but that could always change) so those have to be matches that involve people in the mix to win. I just can't picture the scenario that KENTA wins his match, then Tanahashi loses to Ospreay (very unlikely imo) and then Ibushi and Okada presumably draw. I'm not even sure how you can reach that point where all those things can happen, plus KENTA beating both Okada and Ibushi anyway but they'd both be able to overcome his total points if either of them win their final match and knock KENTA out (cause KENTA holds the tiebreaker). Block A is ridiculously tough to predict.

Agree with KENTA beating Okada, that feels like a lock, same with Juice costing Mox on the final night and getting a US title rematch. Sanada drawing with Okada (cause they love a long match together) was my other dropped point for the champ before losing to Ibushi. I have Taichi cheating to beat Naito to set up a briefcase match, but now I think about it, Goto makes a lot more sense for that spot.

    Re: NJPW G1 CLIMAX 29

I don't think KENTA will win his Block, but if something happened where both Ibushi & Tana got injured he'd be third in my order.

Oh God Naito likes Taichi & so does NJPW, I could totally see that getting campaigned for & putting Taichi with another main event.

    Re: NJPW G1 CLIMAX 29

I was thinking KENTA with the idea that they would want to do Naito vs KENTA. Obviously they want to treat KENTA like a big deal with the way he was announced. BUT they could also do it later and it saves at least one big match rather than doing all of them at once. Most guys in A Block have a decent shout for many reasons (except for Okada because that's the match for the Dome, clearly). I think the safe option still is Tana but what if.

It got one on their first show with Okada v Cody, as far as the western expansion goes.

A fun press conference although the sound was off. The crowd was very annoying for the most part. Well worth watching if you got time. Zack's promo is great.

    Yes.

Currently watching the pre-show of the Dallas event, though you need to use a VPN or something if you are in the US. It will be up later as VOD.

You can watch it in the States via AXS TV if you got it otherwise, I don't know.

You can try use VPN sites, but its better and safer to actually download one. Free ones are probably okay, but a pay one is going to be way better. I got a lifetime VPN Unlimited for about $50. Pretty slick - I can change my "location" to almost any region for streaming and such.

NJPW returns to America, 3 dates in late September: Boston, New York (Hammerstein Ballroom) and Philly (ECW Arena). And Tiger Hattori is retiring .

    Re: NJPW G1 CLIMAX 29

The first day was a pretty good show overall. Most of the undercard tags delivered and built to individual matches well. Every one of the Block matches were very good except for EVIL and Fale (shocking!).

Both Archer and Ospreay had their working boots on, Archer especially. They clearly went out there and went balls to the walls with some crazy stuff. Table bumps, crazy moves off the top rope, a very impressive rope walk by Archer. Very good and enjoyable match. The 20 count tease was excellent. The match slightly missed its peak a little though but nothing was hurt.

I did think that SANADA vs ZSJ lacked that extra bit of focus the last two matches that these guys had each other - both great matches - but I still enjoyed this a ton. Both guys had some great counters for each other with a nice back and forth pace. The momentum constantly shifty kept me on my toes as far as concentrating lol. The finish was awesome.

KENTA vs Ibushi delivered on all that it was promising, even with an injury that could’ve easily blown the match entirely but they worked around it pretty well and salvaged it. Although it was pretty iffy at times and it lost the crowd. The rest was great though. The strikes at the beginning, all which sounded pretty damn gross, even on TV. And the finish was pretty great - a nice increase of pace, urgency and intensity by KENTA. Ibushi’s selling I thought was pretty great throughout.

Like the rest of the show, Okada and Tanahashi Of course, the greatest hits are fucking great. Although I did love the added addition of the dragon screw battle, which sort of reminded me of Tanahashi vs Mutoh’s Dome match. The selling was inconsistent as fuck though, but that comes with the terriotory with Tana and Okada matches. Only gripe that I had with the match. Great main event to end the show and with the crowd going nuts for it, it was well deserved too.

    Re: NJPW G1 CLIMAX 29

For how bad the attendance was the crowd that was there absolutely brought it and elevated this show. Really enjoyed the undercard even, highlighted by Ishii/Shota vs Narita/Cobb. Goto looked in great shape and great form, am convinced he's getting a substantial push in B Block. Thought 4 of the 5 Block matches were really good, but only Archer/Ospreay was great to me, that was a huge standout match for both men and a great win for Archer as I anticipated. I think he'll play the role of "hot start then lose a lot" this tournament and I always thought he was better than DBSJr. of the team in NJPW and just as an all arounder. Fale/EVIL was awful and the wrong man won. Really all 3 main matches I had at your typical "just shy of great but really good ***3/4" level. I don't know what it says for KENTA because Ibushi is the best guy in his Block stylistically and as a wrestler to go against and he still didn't hit the next level. This would have been a lower tier Ibushi match during last year's tournament. Okada/Tana was about the same quality as last year's G1 match which was much lesser than their September match. Just same old same old, but the crowd was nuclear and helped it feel special. Okada's promo was heartfelt and way better than Omega's where he called out how the Arena was empty last time, professional and well done.

Thought it was a strong show to kick things off for the G1 this year. It will be interesting to see if B Block can top it. Still, a substantial failure business wise and that's the biggest story of this show. There's nobody to blame but themselves for having things be this way, (unless you want to count AEW flexing on Mox, but either way) this is the result of bad booking and promotion while at the same time eroding the specialness that carried them earlier. Just a terrible look.

    Re: NJPW G1 CLIMAX 29

On the first half of the show I thought Ishii, Cobb and their young boys had a really good tag match.

Archer/Ospreay was the clear MOTN. My only reservation would be that in introducing this new repackaged Archer, he basically had all his big moves kicked out of so that he had to do top rope super versions of his big moves to win. Other than that, it was pretty damn great, even better than the NJ Cup match and clearly both men were out there to impress and get Archer over as a solid big man in this tournament.

Fale/Evil was shite and everything I hate about what Fale brings to the G1. 8 more matches like this ughhhhhh.

Sanada/Zack was very good but missing something to hit that next level, a bit too long hanging around doing cutesy technical exhibition stuff with no juice behind it. Also not a good look that submission specialist Zack can't work out how to get out of the paradise lock, one of the dumbest moves in wrestling. God I hate most of Sanada's moveset.

Ibushi/KENTA was very good I thought for someone who hasn't wrestled in 6 months. Pity the GTS connected with Ibushi's hand and not his head, felt like the match was set up to put that move over with no other finishers being kicked out of, so the match ended a little anticlimactic for me.

Tanahashi/Okada was their greatest hits I agree. Other than the standing ovation for the first minute, I will never remember that match. One of the weakest they've ever had together.

Good show overall, sucks we have to wait another week now for night 2.

    Re: NJPW G1 CLIMAX 29

We just need to take a moment and take notice of NJPW doing a G1 Climax Show in America. No matter what we think about Wrestlers in it and boy I have a few words one of them, it's still a great moment for NJPW taking their Company on the Road more to the fans all around the World. This will be my fourth year chatting up with you guys for the G1 Climax let's make it the best ever discussing wise shall we.

I thought all the Tag Team Underrcard was doing so perfectly especially the one with Ishii/Umino vs Cobb/Narita. A heated preview leading to Ishii vs Cobb while also showing the top Lions I like this more than the rest of the Tags. Ishii and Cobb are going to beat each other to death because neither guy are in the business of giving up that's for damn sure. Oh and just as a side note Liger said he's going to be Wrestling in places he's never wrestled before on his Retirement Tour, well Delaware is a place I bet you haven't wrestled unless you stopped by a Pit Stop or two going to Philadelphia just saying.

Lance Archer vs. Will Ospreay. I never thought I would be this entertained by a Match involving these two guys. This was an excellent way to kick off the G1 with Archer delivering again as they recaptured the magic of their previous match, but also improved on it while Archer came off looking more motivated than ever and like a player in his best singles match ever. This was also a really well done big man vs. little man match. Ospreay was fantastic here as always. Ospreay is poised for a great G1 to back up his insanely great BOSJ run.

Bad Luck Fale vs. EVIL. Why is this scrub Fale still think these things? I'm not like he's not trying because he is and I see it, it's just that when he's in the G1 for some fucking reason, NJPW doesn't know how to book the result of his Matches. Which is why he was DQ'd like 8 times last year Rocky Romero pointed out. I get it you want him to look like a Monster, but fuck me give EVIL a bone here and give Fale's spot to someone else or might shake things up please.

SANADA vs. Zack Sabre Jr. Boy oh boy did it warm my heart to see SANADA keeping step for step with Sabre JR, and him losing control of himself. A great War or counter Wrestling between the two going back to past encounters and SANADA is looking to start off hot and he did it against one of the toughest Technicians in the Game and survived.

KENTA vs. Kota Ibushi. This is the KENTA we all wanted to see in the WWE, but he was never able to let that come out during his stay there, but it seems to be coming back to him now at the perfect time. He might not be at 100% just yet, but he had one strong performance vs one of the top contenders in Ibushi to win this whole G1. Ibushi looked great as always, and while I would of loved to see Kota win here, KENTA winning makes more sense making him a real threat in the Block.

Kazuchika Okada vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi. First time ever both of these guys facing off on a Night 1 G1 Climax Show and this Match didn't disappoint to me. I had my concerns about Tanahashi coming in, due to how rough he had looked heading into it, but also knew that working with Okada he could still be great and would bust his ass with a whole week to rest before getting back to action. The thing is that even a banged up Hiroshi Tanahashi is still Hiroshi fucking Tanahashi , and while it wasn’t up to their previous lofty standards, it was still a great match and main event to lose out this show. Tanahashi was doing everything he could even busting out the moth-balled high fly flow as he gave the US audience all he had, but Okada winning made the most sense here. The ace is a national treasure.

Lastly the last few years I haven't given Kelly/Romero a chance on Commentary with the G1 Climax pretty much always listening to the NJPW squad, but I might change it up this year. Romero calling Gedo and Jado Fredo 1 and Fredo 2 was hilarious to me.
