Black Panther being nominated for Best Picture is a complete joke but I understand why it was done. The ratings have been down for the last few years and I'm sure the braintrust over there thinks that more people will watch if it has a shot at winning. However, that doesn't change the fact that it wasn't even the best comic book movie last year. Hell, I just saw Aquaman yesterday and I thought THAT was better. Anyhow, it looks like I've got some catching up to do as I haven't had the chance to watch a lot of these yet but I'll jump on that ASAP and make sure to post thoughts in here as I go through the nominated films/performances.

Alright, your turn everyone. In the immortal words of Ruben....thoughts?

This is the worst best picture category that I can remember. BlacKkKlansman is the only decent one here, though i've yet to see Roma. Bale deserves a nom for Vice but does it deserve a Best picture nod? Absolutely not. Sorry To Bother You, Beautiful Boy, mid90s and Eighth Grade were fucking robbed and you wont ever convince me that they arent deserving of Best Picture noms.

You can add Boy Erased and Leave No Trace to that list as well since both are likely to make my top 10 for the year. I'd argue Hereditary but it's a horror movie so it never had a shot. I do think Toni Collette was snubbed for a Best Actress nomination though.

Agreed that mid90’s got robbed, that is an excellent movie with a solid soundtrack, Sorry to Bother You was also robbed. Also, I must be the only one that couldn’t get into BlackKklansman, I just found it dull.

I did like Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody, and A Star is Born. I think Spider-Verse should win best animated film but I doubt it will.

    Slim pickens this year.

Stoked to see Sam Elliot and First Reformed get nominations.

Would love to see Dafoe win but Bale got fat and Mr. Robot so eh.

Nah, I thought BlacKkKlansman was pretty average too. It had potential to be both funnier and more dramatic than it was and some elements felt amateur at times, from unfocused shots, awkward editing and a painfully unsubtle approach to relating this to Trump.

Really bad Best Picture category. I loved BlacKkKlansman and thought A Star is Born was rock solid, the rest of it is middling, except Roma and the Favourite neither of which I've seen yet.

Spider-Verse winning would salvage a lot of this shitshow though.

Re: 91st Academy Awards Nominations and Live Discussion Thread - February 24th, 2019

Got caught up on watching a couple of the Oscar movies the past week, haven't seen Bohemian Rhapsody or a Star is born but out of the rest I hope Green Book wins but Roma should probably win. And I'd really love to see Viggo win, guess he's kinda the new Leo so we'll see how long until he gets his best Actor win.
I didn't really like Blackkklansman much, seemed sloppy and couldn't agree with this more...

That kinda took me out of the movie.
Into the spider verse would be cool to see win and although I haven't seen it yet, it sounds like it should win but I'm betting Isle of Dogs wins.
Didn't get to watch nearly as much as I wanted to before the show so after'll be when I finally get around to most of the movies.

Only category I can realistically comment on is Animation, and even then I haven't seen Mirai or Ralph 2 yet.

That said, Spider-Verse should take that easily, but it wouldn't surprise me if it ends up with Disney winning it yet again.

Re: 91st Academy Awards Nominations and Live Discussion Thread - February 24th, 2019

Now that we've gotten past the super hero movies in Best Picture stigma (hopefully? even if I don't think Black Panther deserves to even be nominated), I hope animated features get past that and start qualifying for more categories as well. I haven't watch Mirai but watched the rest; should go to either Isles of Dogs or Into the Spider-Verse, but I'd lean towards the latter, as much as I enjoyed Isles of Dogs. Don't think Ralph Breaks the Internet or Incredibles 2 (both of which I enjoyed) really deserved the nomination, and as always, I wish they'd give more chances to anime/foreign animated films.

Wish Sorry to Bother You had gotten nominated for stuff and got more attention.

Sorry to Bother You was dope. I had no idea what it was going into it other than the "white voice" part of it. Should've at least got a screenplay nod.

As much as I enjoyed Sorry To Bother You, I dunno what else I'd nominate for besides Best Original Screenplay. I guess the production design was pretty cool.

    Maybe Best Original Song for

Anybody else watch? I feel like pretty much all the right people won.

    Spoiler:

Best song was a bit of a joke, was there seriously no other songs to compete with the lady gaga song?
I wish Viggo coulda won but Rami pretty much had it wrapped up from the start. Roma winning a bunch was nice and I was really happy and very surprised that Green Book took best picture because it's my personal fave from the movies nominated and I thought for sure it was between Roma and bohemian rhapsody.
Also, even though I still haven't seen it, how awesome is it that spider verse won best animated? Guess maybe I'll run to the theater to check it out this week instead of waiting.

Happy all around with who won tonight. I didn't see Green Book winning Best Picture I had A Star is Born or Black Panther taking the Oscar, but in a weird way it's cool we got something different. Those films won in other categories during the Show, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse winning is so great. Just like Black Panther it's more than a film based off a Character in a Comic book. What greatness is in the Comics with Miles Morales they captured it so well throughout the film.

I'm actually shocked Colman won for Actress in a Leading Role, thought Gaga had that in a bag. The Favourite and Mary Queen of Scots two of my favorite films of the year everyone should check out those Films out stat. Gaga and Cooper's performance tonight had me puddie in their hands man they are so good together.

I’m happy for Lady Gaga winning, and I’m happy for Into The Spider-Verse winning best animated film. That performance from Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper was wonderful too.

The alleged real story behind The Green Book had me uneasy about it winning any awards and I was sort of hoping something else would get it. I still haven't watched it but I doubt I'll be able to without feeling extremely skeptical of the narrative no matter how good it is.

I need to watch A Star Is Born but my expectations are sky high for it now.

Bohemian Rhapsody winning 4 Oscar's including Best Actor has pretty much dismantled The Academys credibility going forward, not a good look

honestly, i doubt it. i doubt the academy can do anything to really dismantle their "credibility". but how come? because of bryan singer or something else?
