Booty's Lost Traxx of the 80's

So I have been in one of my heavy 80s moods lately and decided to do a deep dive into some of the lesser known 80s tracks. I have so far made 17 different mixes of 20-25 songs each for this. I will go over each mix and provide said mix in youtube and Spotify form (if anyone wants to take my youtube list and make ones for Amazon Music and Apple Music that would be fantastic) These songs are going to be from 79-90 which means we will get some of the songs that were right on that bubble into 80s greatness. These are songs that might of been hits but were soon forgotten, songs that don’t appear on a lot of mixes or compilations, maybe from a movie and just didn’t get the love, of course I may have misjudged some of their popularity so there may be some songs that are hits. Bottom line is that they are all fantastic tracks. Please comment on the songs under the video post so that we can keep this as neat and tidy as possible. So without further ado here is my first mix

    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...6y3J3JFoAeXDJj

    spotify list here- https://open.spotify.com/user/122979...TN6RmP-b3TIbjQ

ok this track is one that I am sure I heard back in the 80s as it feels really familiar to me but until very recently I had forgotten all about it and I really can’t get enough of it. It is so damn catchy and you can’t help but dance around your room when it’s on. Sadly there is no actual music video so here is a nice custom video some one made.
    https://youtu.be/IiVvKB7w9Vc

Paul Simon of course is no stranger to big hits and while this may certainly fit into the hit category I feel it doesn’t get nearly as much play on the 80s circuit as it should. Plus the video is so damn funny. The chemistry with Chevy and Paul is on point.
    https://youtu.be/ULjCSK0oOlI

While the Beasties are one of the greatest acts of all time and Fight for Your Right is 1000% an 80s staple the first single of their sophomore album doesn’t get quite the same treatment. On an album full of great songs this funky tune sometimes gets overlooked. Also another great video.
    https://youtu.be/Naf5uJYGoiU

Night Ranger’s mostly know for Sister Christian and they have a spattering of other hits this one has always been my person favorite. I just love the harmonizing with the riff…but this video is really really bad…towards the end look at the keyboardist and his weird movements while playing and the blonde guitar player has a really unconventional way of playing also towards the end..
    https://youtu.be/UGLeg3y3b1U

Joe Walsh is more thought of as a 70s rocker but he had some really good solo stuff and this is a song I was really made aware of on the movie The 40 Year Old Virgin and it’s been in my rotation ever since
    https://youtu.be/EzEzIBHuUmU

while Steve Martin’s Dentist song may have been the show stealer I decided to go with this track instead showing of Mr Moranis and Ms Green’s singing chops and what really ends up being the most powerful song of this great movie
    https://youtu.be/9DD7VIKZnGA

Paul Davis's song Cool Night was quite popular as was this one at the time but I feel it gets looked over when it is just so dang fun…a do wop diddy woo do. I couldn’t find the actual music video but this Solid Gold performance does pretty dang good..
    https://youtu.be/AWdqqMHflYo

the follow up to their massive hit about Josie and her vacation far away is also a damn good song but considering Your Love is today just as huge as ever it’t no wonder no one ever remembers their other songs…also this video is strange as hell and there is no doubt this boys are from the UK…also their heads are weirdly close at one point…
    https://youtu.be/qvKJ8_7vBxs

Charlie Sexton never really was on my radar until he showed up in a Spotify weekly discover playlist for me. The song is pretty cool and kind of different for the time…the video doesn’t do him many favors though
    https://youtu.be/uCRtHVEroQ0

Al Jarreau often gets overlooked in the scope of soul singers of the 70s and 80s but thanks to Breakin we get introduced to this funky jam that really you can’t help but jam out to. This video though..Al’s faces are a trip throughout it and like…he’s doing a photo shoot but won’t stand still…I wonder if people were ever like OK Al let’s turn it down a few notches…you don’t always have to be on man…
    https://youtu.be/eL8vHOAp9E8

Julie Brown’s show was a trip and had a lot of bad to go with the good but her music was always entertaining like this one from Earth Girls Are Easy. Lyrically hilarious and Brown plays the bimbo to a tee
    https://youtu.be/4Ol4oWChjzk

Bette Davis Eyes was a massive hit for Carnes but I so much prefer this song guess i’m just a sucker for some harmonizing. Also after watching the video I’m convinced her entire bad are creepers…
    https://youtu.be/RVhJwrWJNm0

ok so Roachford looks like Dule Hill in a Canadian Tuxedo but this song has major soul and is a great jam..stumbled upon this when researching for my 2100 song 80s list on spotify and I really dig it..he’s a total goofball in the video but in a good way it’s a shame he never caught on
    https://youtu.be/sbscx0S3jcY

one of the most prolific rock bands of the 80s was ZZ Top and they churned out hit after hit and this song was never released as a single but it’s featured in the movie One Crazy Summer and beginning riff just always stuck in my head so I want more people to hear so listen away
    https://youtu.be/Ez5od6A0V9U

over the last few years I have become a massive fan of the Tubes..while I had always known She’s a Beauty and Sushi Girl (from their SCTV appearance) I never checked out more of their music until recently when I got their albums on vinyl…and this song moves the fuck out of me…very simple but man is it awesome..Fee Waybill kills it on this track
    https://youtu.be/90PI_8NyMoQ

over the years I have come to appreciate the Hagar era of Van Halen a lot more than I had when it was happening…I still prefer the Roth years but Hagar had some real hits (and no I’m not a cop). This is just a really powerful song that shows off Hagar’s vocals. Probably overlooked when people talk about the best Van Halen songs
    https://youtu.be/wk3XSV6H6w0

We can thank the movie Valley Girl for a lot of songs that we have grown to love but none as eccentric and fun as this song by the band Sparks..also no video for this
    https://youtu.be/OpDmF2zu0_I

speaking of fun and weird Mojo Nixon educates us all on the greatness of Elvis and that he is in fact everywhere…loved this song as a kid and always looked forward to the Dr Demento video countdown because I knew this would eventually show up…I guess I could have recorded it on our VCR but i was 10 gimme a break
    https://youtu.be/mpb4ZAAP6Z4

lawyers were in love and she is somebodies baby but Browne’s For America is oft forgotten about when people talk about the man’s hits…I really like the guitar riff/sax solo in the bridge…just a great song from a great talent
    https://youtu.be/MVyxjQ3JaKA

this could be nicknamed the One Crazy Summer mix as this is the track that plays at the end during the credits and since that moment has been one of my favorite songs…for years I couldn’t find it via napster or buying the cd but now I have it in my life again and it makes me very happy…great song from these Canadian rockers
    https://youtu.be/GaELZ5q6Y7M

about 3 months ago Spotify suggested this song to me and I was blown away as I had never heard this song and that it felt like a 70s prog rock song but with a definite 80s feel..it’s quite a lovely song and truly nothing like any other 80s song I can think of..truly give this song a few listens if you’ve never heard it before
    https://youtu.be/Ofz0iJQd-xU

not that this song isn’t well known but I really enjoy it I think it makes a great outro for my first installment..I’ll have another mix up in a week or so and can’t wait to read all your thoughts on these songs

Re: Booty's Lost Traxx of the 80's

Just a few quick thoughts for now...

You Can Call Me Al - I'm not sure if you ever listen to Sirius Radio 80's on 8 but it's definitely not underplayed on that station. I swear I heard it at least 5 times last week. It is a great tune although I've always been a little more partial to I Know What I Know from the same album, along with the excellent title track.

Hey Ladies - I hadn't really thought about it until you mentioned it but yeah, I don't really hear it getting a lot of play these days, which is sad. The video is as awesome as the song and I love that cowbell drop.

Jackson Browne - I listen to the Lawyers in Love album a lot and while that's a good tune I've always preferred Tender is the Night and For a Rocker. For America is a great tune as well though and you really can't go wrong with the guy in any period of his career. Plus he banged Daryl Hannah when she was in her Splash days so he's an automatic hero of mine.

I'll listen to some more of those tomorrow and continue on with my thoughts.

Thanks man yeah I guess Al was a stretch but any chance to show that video is a bonus for me

    Fuck yes the cowbell!

Yeah on a later list I have You’re a Friend of Mine and Hannah is in that video and man was she a gorgeous woman

I am in agreement with Fuji. I have Sirius and hear it alot but I love that Paul Simon song anyways so who gives a shit it's a great song.

Hey ladies is another golden song. I love everything the beasties have done and awaiting their song girls to offend someone today since everything does now.

Love this Idea man and that song from one crazy summer is great and so is that movie and a shirt from that movie would be awesome as well.

Re: Booty's Lost Traxx of the 80's

I didn't know these were lost, because at least one of these songs are played by me everyday.

The blonde guitarist (Jeff Watson) in Night Ranger was just screwing around with his 5 seconds in the video. The main three guys were always the focus Brad Gillis (other guitarist), Jack Blades (bass, vocals) and Kelly Keagy (drums, vocals). Watson has an 8 finger technique that he'll breakout in NR videos on occasion...he was a better technical guitarist than Gillis, but Gillis was the rock star.

That Balance band has Bob Kullick in it, former KISS guitarist and super session guy.

Charlie Sexton was 16 in that video, as he was kind of a musical prodigy. He'd go onto form the ArcAngels with Doyle Bramhall II and Double Trouble (SRV's band), that's more his style. Saw him a bunch of years ago at SXSW, he's just 50 and still performing.

Sirius was the intro song for the Jordan era Bulls, but Alan Parsons super Engineer (Abbey Road, Dark Side of the Moon) and producer.

Love the Tubes, this is one the songs most people don't know. This is one of the few songs by the actual Tubes. Talk To Ya Later (also on this album) and She's a Beauty, you know the hits...were constructs of Fee (the singer), David Foster (producer) and Steve Lukather (Toto), he played the guitars and bass on those songs...Toto, since they were all session guys are all over the hits of the early 80's...Read Thriller's liner notes...EVH is known for playing the solo on Beat It, but Lukather plays everything else.

Honeymoon Suite has a couple of hits and are still kicking around. A friend of mine has a music podcast that talks to mainly past hit makers and he spoke to Derry Grehan who wrote, "New Girl Now" and "What Does It Take." https://thehustle.podbean.com/

Sirius was also Ricky Steamboat's theme song back in the WWF days. I'll never forget picking up Alan Parsons Project's "Eye in the Sky" on vinyl (I liked the cover) and immediately shouting out "holy shit it's the Ricky Steamboat theme song" when it started playing.

Re: Booty's Lost Traxx of the 80's

I wasn't climbing on your back, just informing.

    Songs from Me:

Red Rockers - China, I have a connection to the bass player in this band.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eoqz6GfjTM

'Til Tuesday - Coming Close, they were well know for Voice Carry, but this is my favorite song by them.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDZQ70uHbIo

Ph.D - Little Susie's On The Up, Tesla's version is probably better known, but I love both of them.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKgzYLBV_cc

Soul Asylum - Cartoon/Marionette/Sometime to Return, all from Hang Time, arguably a better album than Grave Dancers Union...
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9IAF5Q6S79I

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tkrbbhoGzQ

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_lGnFtKJrk

Long Lost Brother of Mine - Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman & Howe, when Jon Anderson left YES, he reunited with the classic lineup (minus Chris Squire) and did this album
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1vGoyxOwGI

Altered Images - Happy Birthday, you may know this song, maybe not
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6t1vaF50Ks0

The Plimsouls - A Million Miles Away/Everywhere At Once/Oldest Story in the World - if you've ever seen the movie Valley Girl, they are band that's playing whenever cage is in the punk club - super great band that should've been huge.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJ31oz0DECw

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8uU1Zezxcc

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo9qQ9lAV5w

The Members - Working Girl, super catchy early MTV song
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-HuxBgt-rGY

Paul McCartney - Silly Love Songs, now this is from his movie, Give My Regards to Broad Street...which is horrible, but this is great, yes it's a Wings song from the 70's, but his backing band here is Steve Lukather - guitar, Jeff Porcaro - drums from Toto and Louis Johnson - bass, session guy that did everything, but was the guy behind "Billie Jean" and "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," the video is super cheesy, but their playing is amazing.

I hate that Paul McCartney song almost as much as I hate that terrible Christmas song that he did. It always makes me barf out my Corn Flakes when I hear it.

I get you, but it's for the Louis Johnson bass run near the end. They don't call him Thunder Thumbs for nothing.

Re: Booty's Lost Traxx of the 80's

alright I am back with part 2 of my lost traxx of the 80’s series..
here is the youtube playlist for you to enjoy
    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...EGM_dVoXDDhv-r
    spotify playlist is first comment
as always if anyone wants to make an apple or amazon version of this playlist and post it that would be most excellent

    https://open.spotify.com/user/122979...Qiy50oSMnvT9yQ

starting off with the great Diana Ross who isn’t really known for her 80s hit but this is for sure a nice little pop dance track from Ms Ross
    https://youtu.be/lspNn8ZBAsI

We now get a nice little rocker from the Fabulous Thunderbirds who had a bigger hit with Tuff Enuff but Wrap it Up is also a great toe tapper now…BABY

    https://youtu.be/51270i8F3mU

soft rock was huge in the 80’s due to Christopher Cross and Air Supply…so of course in Canada we get Airplay…Bix is a song that makes no sense at all lyrically but it’s a great little tune and def something we can all mellow out to

    https://youtu.be/QqpNffY2k6k

Juice had some real hits in the 80’s and this one gets forgotten often but I enjoy it and wanted to share it

    https://youtu.be/1tatoOZ2-uw

Stevie Wonder has a massive catalog of hits to pick from but this one right here is one I consider to be one of his more understated hits

    https://youtu.be/Moh71FwhL-Q

I am gonna be honest here…Don’t You Forget About Me is one of my least favorite songs which sucks because I love the Breakfast Club but I do quite like this song by Simple Minds

    https://youtu.be/tytPcvyJASc

The late Queen of Soul was a powerhouse for many years and even in the 80s had some massive hits like Pink Cadillac but for some reason the way her voice mixes with the music makes it my personal favorite Aretha track

    https://youtu.be/U40W8N_VTBA

The Pointer Sisters had a great decade in the 80s from Jump to Neutron Dance and so on but Automatic has a different feel than the rest and I wanted to give it some love

    https://youtu.be/KNi8aW8Nf6s

One of the fruits from Prince’s tree had some decent success in the 80’s but this nice little pop diddy I haven’t really heard much throughout the years

    https://youtu.be/d43sBOWYOc0

it’s no secret that I love the movie Fletch and in so I’ve heard this song hundreds of times and it never gets old and is never really mentioned as one of the great songs from a movie and I think it damn well should be

    https://youtu.be/X05fsD2Z4NE

yeah I know anything Michael Jackson related in the 80s is pretty far from lost but man this song never seems to get any airplay and damn is it good the great “dun dun dun dun” all the way through it give it that drive…I just really like this song

    https://youtu.be/9nP4WE_-uqE

I never really heard this song that I can remember until the movie Dogma and that awesome Salma Hayek dancing scene. Since then I have kept this song in pretty consistent rotation. New Edition was great and this song is a good example of it

Now Diana Summer was for sure the Queen of Disco but this song from the 80s was pure dance pop gold…you can’t help but want to move your legs and bebop around to this one

    https://youtu.be/DCtDAAPO-j4

if Bit by Bit is a bonafide movie hit this one right up there with it…Patti Labelle brings it all to this song from the great Beverly Hills Cop and is song 1000% guaranteed to pump you up

Wang Chung is really considered a one hit wonder but they actually had a number of hits Dance Hall Days, Live and Die in LA, and of course Everybody Have Fun Tonight…but this little dance jam should have been a much bigger hit in my eyes

this is one of the 1979ers that lingered well enough into the 80s to count for this kind of like the message of the song…we had to get used to it…but sadly I think way to many people forgot about it

    https://youtu.be/o--kAVWYpIw

another song that I don’t quite understand what is going on lyric wise but it’s pretty cool little forgotten track that I believe came from north of the border…

    https://youtu.be/MXnTbmPxv5g

forgotten gem of a movie is Moving Violations which is about some adults who are forced to take a night time drivers education class which is being run by corruption and it stars Bill Murray’s youngest brother Peter and a young Jenifer Tilley playing a rocket scientist so go watch the movie…until then here are the closing credits and the awesome song of the same name

    https://youtu.be/NXUvDELcXTw

of all places I heard this awesome Canadian 80s track because its the intro to the Louder with Crowder podcast…and it’s amazing

    https://youtu.be/-4eT_0tnj1w

Revenge of the Nerds II is often panned but I actually like it more than the original and I love this song by southern rock band .38 Special

    https://youtu.be/zKbeHoFAKWM

This track isn’t on the Spotify list because its not on Spotify but I didn’t wanna leave this great pop song from a great 80s movie from one of the Fab 4

    https://youtu.be/ht0XM4Z9CXs

great soft hit that I had become familiar with through a torrent about a decade ago

    https://youtu.be/gRJ_vDt4srk

Re: Booty's Lost Traxx of the 80's

A few random thoughts for some of the tunes in here...

Airplay is a nice blast from the Canadian past and Bix is an odd but fun tune. It kind of sounds like the band Chicago had sex with Paul McCartney's "Silly Love Songs" and that was the resulting love child. Not sure if that's a good thing but it's definitely something.

Love that Juice Newton song because it reminds me of my mom, who was a big fan. I'm also partial to Queen of Hearts and holy hell did she have a great start to the 80's with those two albums.

I don't mind Don't You Forget About Me but it's hardly representative of the Simple Minds sound. I've always like She's a River for something more along those lines but All the Things She Said is a great choice as well.

The two tunes from the movies are both great and are instantly memorable. I've always loved that Patti LaBelle tune and it's just one of a few great ones from the BHC soundtrack. Funny that you picked tunes from it and Fletch considering Harold Faltermeyer did instrumentals for both of those movies, though one is obviously a lot more famous than the other.

More Canadian content with Kim Mitchell and might I also take a moment to point out that Go For a Soda was featured in the Miami Vice episode "Buddies". Why did I point that out? I'm sure you know why.

Strange Animal is a classic and Lawrence "don't call me Larry" Gowan could really do no wrong at this point. It's kind of amazing considering prior to this album he was going nowhere fast and luck shone on him in the form of the A&R guy leaving the record for "A Criminal Mind" around at his cottage. Once his teenage daughter and her friends heard it and went gaga he realized Gowan actually had something and promoted the shit out of him. Moonlight Desires is another classic from this great time period in his career.

I love all things Wang Chung and that tune is no exception.
