    FWA Promo Archetypes: What's yours?

I feel like a lot of us fall into a certain "archetype" when we write our promos, and I think that's kind of cool.

For example, I think my archetype is Storytelling. I'm a story teller, and I focus all my promos on character development and telling a vivid descriptive continuous story.

Other archetypes might be something like

Traditional: Focusing on wrestling and your character's wrestling career solely, week to week. Promos like interviews, in ring rants, training sessions, etc.

Outside The Box:These are RPers who just seem to think up all kinds of really creative and outside of the box promos. Sometimes they work and payoff big, and sometimes they flop and just don't get a good reception. Either way they don't have any problems coming up with unique ideas.

The Dialog Artist: These are the RPers who can just talk and talk for hours and hours with their characters, going on big long effective monologues that just come together so well and blend in with their story.

The Storyteller: This RPer focuses a lot on story and their characters background, developing a rich and interesting character who grows each week. Often they try to have a special theme for their promo that connects their story with their on going FWA careers.

The Jack of All Trades: These are the RPers who are at the top, and are there for a reason. They're five tool RPers who can use every style and make it work most of the time. They easily find the perfect ingredients from every archetype to make the perfect promo.

Personally I think a good bit of everyone has at least a couple of these archetypes, some have more. Personally my style has always been story telling and the outside the box thing. I've done some outside of the box promos that paid off before like my Back in Business folk tale rhyming promo from two years ago (one of my personal favorites) or when I wrote a formal essay for a promo. And then there were times I went outside of the box and it flopped too. But those are my big styles.

What are yours? Can you think of any archetypes that I missed or make your own?

Re: FWA Promo Archetypes: What's yours?

I feel like in a lot of ways, I'm still trying to discover who I am as a writer. Trying to find what works best for me. Trying to cut myself off from everyone and everything so that I can go to a place where I can get creative and come up with things is what I like to do, but man it's tough sometimes. I'm the world's worst when it comes to "writer's block." But I definitely feel like I'm onto something when it comes to "The Great I Am" Aaron Kendrick. I love writing for it. I love the challenge of writing from the perspective of someone so much different from myself and whose beliefs are so far out there that it's just a lot of fun to try to do.

As far as a format for RP, I'm still trying to figure out what works. I don't like all the different colors and things like that, but other people seem to. So I may start playing with that a little bit to see what happens.

I once made an RP-style family tree to show how everyone fits in with the retro/original RP'ers of the FWA. It's gone now but it was pretty solid. I also don't know some of the newer RP'ers styles enough to properly place them. Was basically broken up into presentation-focused, traditional content-focused, and creativity-focused.

I don't know what I would class myself as. I've switched around alot ever since I started. I just write whatever I feel like writing. I remember TGO's map of RPers. I think I was closely associated with the likes of ETE and himself but I can't remember.

to add on CB's comment regarding colours, it's about making your promo readable versus making it impossible to read without wanting to burn your own eyes out. I can't stand overuse of colour. I like it when it's done in a way that simply makes the promo more presentable? If that makes sense. If I have to strain to read your promo then you're losing points - I shouldn't have to be doing that. It's not about using all the colours etc.

Co-sign. I wonder if Matt Boudreau would have had as long of a FWA reign if he was part of this generation. I honestly doubt it.

Why do people always try to discredit Boudreau I do not understand. He was the greatest FWA champion just because he is no longer around we should not shit on his accomplishments.

Re: FWA Promo Archetypes: What's yours?

I wasn't shitting on his accomplishments. I was theorizing whether or not he'd be as successful in today's climate. It's no different than discussing if Michael Jordan would be as dominant in todays NBA with LeBron and the legion of super-teams or how Tyson would have faired in the era of Ali, Frazier and Foreman. It's the same hypothetical debate you see on sports panels all the time. I stand by my statement.

Re: FWA Promo Archetypes: What's yours?

Hard to say where I fall in. I'm definitely more of a monologue specialist than I am a dialogue guy, but I also tend to focus a lot on setting and storytelling with my promos. I dunno, whatever I'm doing must be at least relatively decent.

Re: FWA Promo Archetypes: What's yours?

Boudreau wouldn't have been as good today because the fluff he added to his promos wouldn't take him as far. The graders didn't have tons of real-life obligations. Now, we all got shit to do. No one wants to read all that crap.

I've never been the strongest promoer so I generally stick to traditional, but I've been trying to incorporate more storytelling. I'd like to one day move up to Jack of all trades.
