I think the match was 10 minutes max, or at least it felt like it. Loved Gotch almost causing another fight before the match. Lawlor/Von Erichs attacking Contra Unit from behind was a great way to kick off the actual match. Contra Unit was so great in this match. They feel like a team. A nasty, rugged, brutish trio - I love it. The way they use the tape on Lawlor and go to town on the youthful Von Erichs was top stuff. The finish was really cool with Lawlor nailing people with wooden planks. Great escalation of violence and use of weapons. Even better post match angle. Cornette on commentary was some of the best commentary I've heard in ages. Really something to go out of your way to see.

I couldn't agree more. It had a real "ebb and flow" chaotic feel where something was always happening. They shot it great and you noticing the escalation made my day. I picked up on that too. To be honest, I had no idea how good the Von Erichs were in that environment. They really can brawl.

This entire episode had that feel with Low Ki just blowing up that jobber. It was a realistic KO finish just out of nowhere, but it adds a very dangerous aura to one of the most dangerous guys on the roster. MLW has built him up perfectly as a wrecking machine fighter.

Just watched the Main Event, it was pretty fun. Nothing sensational but it's a good and steady hour of wrestling and the ME was cool.

The Contra Unit have been built as a real force and I like Jacob Fatu, hope he becomes a star! I'm a sucker for that Samoan heritage.

The Von Erichs were decent enough, very green and the claw stuff didn't really come off that well until they did their finish which was pretty cool.

I'm going to be honest, I'm a little disappointed in this past show going into KoC.

Austin's debut, Fatu squash, Lawlor and Samael throw away? It all felt recooked or failed to live up to the hype.

    Re: MLW Discussion Thread

The Fatu vs. Lawlor title match was a wonderful brawl that made Fatu look like a million bucks.

I don't think Lawlor lost much overness in the loss, but he has to work on getting smoother and more confident in the ring. I can see when he is comfortable and not thinking about everything and when he is trying to recall spots in the ring and slowing down. Lawlor seems to freeze when the match does not go as planned and really needs a good worker to get him through at times. I still like him. Love his potential, but I'd like to see him work on his craft a little more.

Now where do we go from here with CONTRA? MLW has to start revealing things about them now. My hope is they keep it simple and not try and over book it.

    Re: MLW Discussion Thread

If Fatu doesn’t end up making it big, I’ll be stunned. While not a great match, it had a ‘big fight’ feel to it, and I think you nailed that critique of Lawlor, Rhyno. I enjoy watching him despite some deficiencies, and he was a good choice to be champion with his legit MMA background, but I’m delighted MLW pulled the trigger on the switch here. Felt like a big moment, and even bigger that there wasn’t any controversy in the finish. Just wonder now what happens with LA Parks future title shot hanging in the balance and with Contra essentially overshadowing Promociones Dorado as the main heel faction. With Salina being positioned in the crowd on Saturday watching, I’d assume there’ll be some friction or collusion between those factions soon enough.

The PPV announcement was a surprise, but I’m confident they’ll put together something pretty big (for this level of promotion at least) with the guys they’ve got on the roster.

    Re: MLW Discussion Thread

Just finished watching Kings of the Colosseum.

I love hearing Jim Cornette on commentary. I wish AEW could have him got him alongside Jim Ross & Excalibur.

MJF is on fire! Everything he does at the moment is a home run and him being on commentary for the opening match was fun. Match was decent enough. Good opening contest. Hammerstone is an impressive looking dude while Brazil reminds me of Swann the way he moves around the ring.

Really cool announcement with the MLW Superfight on PPV.

Reed vs Horus was again decent enough. Nothing too standout or fancy. Pretty cool that Horus is the cousin of Rey Mysterio though. I didn't know that.

Dynasty promo was a little stiff. Expected a little more charisma from Brian Pillman Jr.

Intrigued by the Konnan & Salina exchange.

Dr Wagner JR coming soon to MLW. Sweet.

Build up for the Main Event has been really good. Contra Unit and Fatu has been built as badass heels and massive threat to everyone! While Lawlor has been a credible Champion who is intense and believable that he could knock your block off at any point because of his MMA background.

Some of Fatu's athleticism is unbelievable! The genetics in that Samoan bloodline is like nothing else. Potential to be a BIG star in the business.

Anybody have thoughts on Alexander Hammerstone?

He's getting a great push and has a good look, but his promos can range from poor to good. Not sure he's as big as he looks in MLW,but he has a Big Poppa Pump attitude that really has some legs to it.

I haven't seen him wrestle because I just started watching a bit of MLW recently but he does not have a good look in my opinion, nothing about him stands out, he looks really generic and he can't cut a good promo.

    Re: MLW Discussion Thread

Is there a problem in wrestling where people don't value selling enough? I was watching the Bestia vs Warner match, Warner attempts a chop on the outside, misses, hits the ring post REALLY hard, and then less than a minute later, he's chopping Bestia full force on the outside, as if his hand doesn't hurt or nothing happened.

One thing I used to love about the old ROH with guys like Bryan and Nigel, they would sell the living fuck out of every body part, whether they were working "hurt", or something happened during the match. They never relied on 450s, flash moves, etc. They just made matches and moves look brutal and were fantastic at keeping momentum going. Although there's been some great independent talent, has anyone actually surpassed Nigel or Bryan in the past few years in anyone's eyes?

    Re: MLW Discussion Thread

Your complaint is valid but it's simply unrealistic to hold wrestlers to the standard of prime Danielson and McGuinness. I would say David Starr and Timothy Thatcher are the top two guys who might tickle your fancy.

I've watched some of Starr's promos and they were great, although admittedly I haven't seen either of those two wrestle. I'll definitely have to check it out! Any recent recommendations?

    Re: MLW Discussion Thread

    For Thatcher there's

    - vs. Biff Busick (Beyond Wrestling 2014)
    - vs. Chris Hero (BOLA 2015)
    - w/ WALTER & Axel Dieter Jr. vs. Pete Dunne, Tyler Bate & Trent Seven (PROGRESS Chapter 47)
    - vs. WALTER (PROGRESS Chapter 62)
    - vs. Zack Sabre Jr. (EVOLVE 79)
    - w/WALTER vs. Brody King and Tyler Bateman (PWG ASW 14)

    And David Starr

    - vs. Eddie Kingston (AAW United We Stand 2017)
    - vs. Matt Riddle (CZW Eighteen)
    - vs. Matt Riddle (PWG Bask in the Glory)
    - vs. Jurn Simmons (wXw Fan Oberhausen)
    - vs. Ilja Dragunov (PROGRESS Chapter 78)
    - vs. Jordan Devlin (PROGRESS Chapter 88)

And they have a match against each other I recommend: David Starr vs. Timothy Thatcher at OTT Wrestlerama 2.

Fittingly a lot of their opponents in these matches are up there in terms of work quality as well.

I'm certain the more indy-centric guys here can throw more recommendations at you.

    Re: MLW Discussion Thread

Thatcher and Smith was a fun contest. It started slow and Smith botched a spot or two, but I liked the shoot , strong style match. I get the hype with Thatcher now.

The newest member on Contract debuting was neat.

All in all, really good episode this week.

    Re: MLW Discussion Thread

My first time watching Thatcher, it wasn't a bad match at all. I can see the appeal in Thatcher. Does he have any character outside of a british strong-style submission specialist though? He has a great look to be some sort of bar fighter, or even some guy that came out of prison, or from the slums.

    Re: MLW Discussion Thread

Decided to give this a go, almost the exact opposite of ROH's TV show. Not as good match quality wise, but far more interesting as a show, with better characters and a sense things are actually happening and feel important.

First time seeing Contra and straight away they come across as just dangerous and dangerous. Hard to believe that's the dude from the Vaudevillains in there. One show in and straightaway that War Chamber match has my attention, good shit.

    Re: MLW Discussion Thread

I really enjoyed this weeks offering. Every segment built towards something and nothing felt "throw away". MLW does a good job of rotating their players around where everyone gets screen time and looks good. They can careen off the edge sometimes with the silliness, but it always has an ECW-like edge to it. Mance with the chainsaw tonight was an example. The Harts pissing on Hammerstone's coat was another, but at least it leads to something and isn't just done for a gag.

    Some guys that I liked:

Austin Ares looked good tonight. He's working a much heavier and believable style than his 205 run and really laid into Austin Ares tonight.

Mance Warner has star charisma, but a very brawl-centric style that can really only look good in one type of match. I like his gimmick, but I'm not sure about the in-ring talent. At best, he's a more dangerous Cody Deaner type character in a bigger promotion (at this point in his career). I wish he would expand his ring game a little more so I can get behind him.

LA Park comes off looking like a bad ass again by having a nice street fight with Jimmy Havoc. Notice at the end, he wasn't really backing down from Warner or his chainsaw. I like how they are maintaining his bad-ass quality as he waits to cash in his title oppurtunity.

Mance Warner looks like a badass redneck Casey Frey.

In case y'all cont know who Casey Frey is...

But aside from that, MLW is building a fine collection of talent. At this point, I'm way more interested in their roster than ROH's.

I believe he's only just signed with MLW so he may not just yet, although I've only just started dipping my toes into this company.

Will watch this weeks show later, but the promise of yet another Jimmy Havoc death match doesn't do a lot for me. Hopefully it not taking place in PROGRESS freshens it up a bit.
