Panther's March Madness '18 - The Best DC/Marvel Movie of All Time

Yes that's right, because everyone loves tournaments and there's no better month for them than March, everyone's least favorite Smod is here to drop a big ol' bomb on you guys. With Marvel's granddaddy of 'em all on the horizon let's all get in the mood with a tournament to determine just who made the best superhero movie of all time. Was it Marvel, or perhaps DC? The two have warred for many years and it's time to settle the debate once and for all.

Now I know what you're thinking. Where's Hellboy and Judge Dredd? What about Darkman and the Green Hornet? Sorry chums, I thought about throwing all of our heroes into the pot but the field was just too damn big at that point, so I decided to leave this little grudge match to the big guys in charge of this whole thing. This also applies to the litany of animated movies each company has made. We're leaving this to the live action stuff.

So all throughout March I'll be posting up threads in this here little section until we've decided once and for all in March Madness fashion what is the greatest Marvel or DC movie ever made. Start rewatching now folks, it's about to get dicey.

For reference, here are your entrants for the tournament, seeded in accordance with their average critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The play-in games between the just, truly abysmal, films on this list will be first up in the next day or two. Let's rock and roll.

    Spoiler:

Man, the bottom part of that list is fucking terrible yet I'd still vote for most of them over The Dark Knight Rises.

Also, I'd at least have entertained the idea of putting some better movies in as the play in's. Darkman and Dredd (not the Stallone one although that's fun in its own way) would at least have stood a chance of pulling an upset once the actual tournament begins, particularly if they grab those coveted 10 or 12 spots.

Re: Panther's March Madness '18 - The Best DC/Marvel Movie of All Time

The long round one slog is over! Here's our round of 32 and a few fun stats so far!

    The remaining field
    Spoiler:

    • Ant-Man
    • The Avengers
    • Avengers: Age of Ultron
    • Batman
    • Batman Begins
    • Batman Returns
    • Black Panther
    • Blade
    • Captain America: Civil War
    • Captain America: The First Avenger
    • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
    • The Dark Knight
    • The Dark Knight Rises
    • Deadpool
    • Doctor Strange
    • Guardians of the Galaxy
    • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
    • Iron Man
    • Iron Man 3
    • Hulk
    • Logan
    • Spider-Man
    • Spider-Man 2
    • Spider-Man: Homecoming
    • Superman
    • Superman II
    • Thor: Ragnarok
    • The Wolverine
    • Wonder Woman
    • X2: X-Men United
    • X-Men
    • X-Men: First Class

    • The acclaimed MCU is off to a great start. Of the final 32, 14 of them are from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a franchise that started just 10 years ago.
    • That makes the MCU 14-4 in combat so far with Captain America leading the pack with a sparkling 3-0 record, plus the two Avengers movies he featured in also advancing. The only movie with Cap not to advance? Thor: The Dark World and that was a lowly cameo.
    • DC's heavy hitters have had mixed success. Of six Superman movies, only the first two remain. Batman's had some better luck, with five of his eight solo adventures making it through. Their two team-up movies both failed to advance.
    • Marvel's most popular superhero, Spider-Man, is having a decent showing so far. The critically maligned Amazing series failed to make a dent, but three of his six films are still hanging around.
    • Though there's an argument to be made for Wolverine as well. His team, the X-Men, have three out of six movies left, but two out of three Wolverine solo films are still in play. Maybe he's better off alone.
    • The dawn of the superhero movie certainly occurred around the turn of the century, but don't count out the old boys yet. There's still five movies in the field from before the year 2000, and considering there weren't that many superhero movies yet, that's a pretty good number.

    Round of 32 start todayyyyy

Re: Panther's March Madness '18 - The Best DC/Marvel Movie of All Time

Sweet 16 is set, this is where it gets hard...

    • The Avengers
    • Avengers: Age of Ultron
    • Batman Begins
    • Batman Returns
    • Blade
    • Captain America: Civil War
    • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
    • The Dark Knight
    • The Dark Knight Rises
    • Guardians of the Galaxy
    • Iron Man
    • Logan
    • Spider-Man: Homecoming
    • Superman
    • Thor: Ragnarok
    • X2: X-Men United

Captain America is no longer undefeated, but maybe just because he had to fight himself. Movies involving the star spangled hero make up 1/4 of the remaining field.

Similarly, thanks to the acclaimed Nolan trilogy going undefeated, Batman takes up another 1/4th. The only outlier? Burton's Batman Returns.

The MCU as a whole was bound to drop in numbers but is still hanging strong with exactly half the field represented by MCU films.

Blade is far and away the lowest overall seed in the tournament, the 48th overall selection. It will do battle with another Cinderella in this round, the 30 seeded Age of Ultron.
