Re: The Fresh and Civil Politics Thread

People who throw terms like "racist" at people because of their political beliefs are a huge part of the problem in politics at the moment. Instead of engaging them and trying to listen to their concerns they dismiss their opinions because they're "racist". All that leads to is frustration and you're likely to solidify their opinion rather than change their mind.

The exact same thing happened with Brexit over here. Too often the left throws terms like that around and tries and gets some kind of moral superiority over the people who voted against what they did. Instead of actually listening and finding out why people feel the way they do.

The Democrats have rarely been as hypocritical as they are right now, lambasting the other dudes for electing someone with no political experience (amidst many other sensible reasons), and now championing Oprah like she's gonna be the savior of man.

I'd vote for her if she's on the dem side of the ballot but I'd prefer the party stay above the celebrity politics thing and stick to people who know the domain. If Oprah and Dwayne wanna get in the game, they should do it like our dear pariah Al Franken and start with a governship or a senatorial run. If the Dems are desperate to elect a strong minority woman in 2020, there's a perfectly good Kamala Harris on standby.

Trump was blasted for being a bigot because there is a lot of incidents proven that he is. Now if you vote for someone who clearly led a campaign that stereotyped immigrants, refugees, Muslims, Mexicans and blacks, it doesn't mean you are a huge ass bigot. It does however mean that you are ok with your leader leaning that way. Which could be actually worse in some ways because he/she will try and change things that suit those ideas.

If I asked someone why they voted for Trump and if one of their reasons was because I don't want Muslims in my country bringing Sharia law or blowing us up and blah blah blah. Would if be safe to call them a bigot?

    As for Oprah

She's great and all but America looks silly enough voting in celebrities. Doing it again or even doing Oprah vs Dwayne would be beyond ridiculous.

Silk is right. They should start small before going for the big spot.

    I dispute this statement vehemently.

That is merely a matter of opinion.

Correction an opinion backed by evidence

I have even posted an article( in the other thread) that detailed incidents where it would be deemed a bigot if it was anyone else.

I can post it again if you would like.

I understand you don't want to accept his bigotry.

The way the 'evidence' is interpreted is opinion.

    Nothing more.

In some people's opinion, he is a bigot.

You cannot say he is a bigot and state it as fact.

Some article (undoubtedly from a biased liberal source) is not going to make it fact.

So when can you actually say someone is a bigot? What line do they need to cross in your opinion?

Studying cultural anthropology during my college years taught me there are many layers to bigotry.

    Interesting question.

It also just goes to prove my point that it is merely opinion and cannot be stated as fact.

Something you would consider bigoted may not be to someone else.

In that case, the person is a bigot in your opinion. It doesn't make them a bigot to others.

You certainly should not put that label on someone who votes for a guy you consider to be a bigot.

You know it is much more complicated than that.

You are throwing the term around loosely in order to attempt to give you the moral high ground.

    Just like Shock said.

This is a huge contributing factor to why we are at such odds politically in this country.

Instead of hearing someone out and trying to understand their opinion or point of view, we just call them a bigot, a racist, a homophobe, sexist, immoral, a bad person, ....(insert almost any other name here)

If someone calls me an offensive name I am going to shut myself off to them and not try to compromise at all.

    It inhibits cooperation, understanding,......compassion.

Bernie is the correct answer. Joe Biden would also be a good choice, but I'm more of a Bernie guy.

For me it would have to be someone who exhibits and communicates their hatred for EVERYONE of a certain race, religion, etc...

Like someone who hates Jewish people and communicates that belief.

You would be safe saying Hitler is a bigot. That is indisputable.

So if they only exhibit it..it's ok or is one or the other or both?

So stereotyping means not a bigot? Stereotyping doesn't need to be backed by hatred

I'll check it out in a bit. But I was replying to the best candidate discussion but the quote was lost.

Also, I do not want the Rock or Oprah running for president. I get it, but jesus guys, we can do better.

I think the Dems would be better going with a younger candidate.

Seems like it would be a better angle for them.

    Oh puhlease.....

I admit he would do good but the fact that he is older than President Trump opens him up to a lot of vulnerabilities.

I mean at the end of his first term he would be 82 years old.

Yeah, I get it. So let's put young and spry Biden as his VP to be safe. Best of both worlds.

I'm making light of it, but I'm also serious.

    I'm telling y'all, Kamala Harris.

Also Donnie once said he didn't like black people touching his money. But then he once also said he has a great respect for African Americans, so it just depends on which, typically hypocritical, Trump you wanna believe.
