Re: Europa League 2017/18 Discussion Thread

I won't say I was really expecting Arsenal to fail spectacularly going into the second leg.... but I was prepared for the possibility. Didn't really see making it thru this stage coming into the tie, so quite happy. Getting any further is going to depend heavily on who we face next. I don't fancy us taking down Atletico Madrid. Wouldn't be so confident against a few others.

Only seen a clip of it online as I'm just about to turn the match on the PVR on.... but don't love Welbeck blatantly diving. Not so cool, Welbs.

    Quarter Final Draw

    RB Leipzig v Marseille
    Arsenal v CSKA Moscow
    Atletico Madrid v Sporting Lisbon
    Lazio v Red Bull Salzburg

Another favourable draw for Arsenal, expecting Arsenal to go through. Given current UK/Russia tensions, I expected this draw. The difficulty will be the fan trouble. Hope we seal the tie in the first leg at home.

CSKA is a tough tie. Obviously not as nasty as drawing Atletico Madrid or even Lazio. Not really a lot of easy sides to get past at this point. Arsenal are in for a fight to get further, but if they keep playing as well as they did against Milan. And Welbs keeps on a-divin....

I think avoiding Atleti and Lazio was great for Arsenal, I think either of the Red Bull teams would have been the easier games, with CSKA, Marseille and CP pretty much on par. Arsenal should get past CSKA over 2 legs though. The away tie will be tough, CSKA away always has been, and the crowd trouble will be an issue no doubt.

Great win, good result to take into the 2nd leg. Usually I’m not confident for Arsenal matches but I think the tie is over. Shouldn’t have problems in the 2nd leg with a 3 goal advantage.

Good to see Laca scoring twice, he’s getting his confidence back. Ramsey’s second goal was fantastic.

Happened to be at home for the match this week (actually all of the European matches) and really enjoyed that one. On paper, this is the kind of result that should have been expected. The crazy thing is that the GK and three central defenders that started for CSKA Moscow are the same foursome who started when the two sides met in 2006. Akinfeev was a kid back then but the three defenders were not.

Arsenal showed brilliant verve going forward at times, but the defensive lapses were still there. They almost conceded a second right after the freekick and looked out of sorts defensively for about ten minutes after that. Just shambles.

Fairly confident of them seeing out the tie in Moscow. But I wouldn't put it past this lot to give up 3 goals. If Ostersunds can pile on some pressure, CSKA certainly can as well.

Looks like Arsenal are set to lose 2-1 in Moscow, but still advance. Bless Welbs for the away goal to make it less dicey. When CSKA went up 2-0, I got a bit worried. Its the ability to play like this that makes me think Arsenal are going to struggle to make it to the final, let alone win it. I'm hopeful.... but I am not expectant.

Arsenal are lucky not to lose so I’m happy with a draw. It’ll be tough whoever we draw in the semis. Atletico Madrid are the faves to win the competition. Salzburg dumped Lazio out, Marseille knocked Leipzig out.

Wouldn’t mind Atletico next because we probably have a better chance of beating team over two legs than the final. I think we’ll get Marseille next.

Re: Europa League 2017/18 Discussion Thread

Would have preferred to get Atletico in the final to some degree, but not sure it will matter much. And no guarantee that Arsenal would get past either of the two remaining sides. Was watching Marseille-Leipzig this morning.... holy fuck did they run a couple nice counters. Up 2-1 in about 12 minutes.

They discussed the possibility of playing Atletico on a recent ArseCast podcast and made a couple good points. Arsenal have generally performed well in finals (Carabobo Cup aside) while Atletico haven't done as well. Another factor, which I don't think was mentioned on the pod, is that Atletico have left themselves with a very short squad, and key players might be getting worn down a bit as the season rolls on. Over two legs, Arsenal have been very inconsistent of late - one good performance, one bad or mediocre one.

Have a feeling that quite a few Gooners are wanting the Europa League trophy as much because they think it will be a swan song to carry Wenger off as because its a trophy. Fuck that, I want it because its a trophy, and a European one at that. Ain't nothing gonna dislodge Wenger. Nothing.

Happy with the draw. Massive game, feels like a CL tie. Think we've got a better chance against Atletico over two legs than in a single game final. Would hurt a little less than to go out now than the final. Atletico are the faves to win the EL. Sporting beat them in the QF 2nd leg so we may have a chance.

Arsenal need to get the job done at home in the first leg. I think Mkhi’s season is over which is a huge blow. Salzburg are having a great run in this competition and they have knocked out some very good teams. They will probably beat Marseille to make the final.

A draw is a shit result for Arsenal as it feels like a defeat. Our defense keeps letting us down. We have it all to do in the 2nd leg. Not confident at all now as we’ll get hammered at Atletico’s ground. Atletico haven’t conceded a goal at home in the EL so that’s the tie over. For over 80 minutes we can’t even beat a team with 10 men. The manager needs to replace so many of our poor players in the Summer.

A draw that feels like a defeat. The most Arsenal result possible. Got every advantage, dominated play, had chance after chance after chance after chance.... but could only convert one. And then a ridiculous late goal on a defensive error. Not bad enough to feel impossible, but getting the to the final is now highly unlikely. Good thing Wenger hasn't bothered to correct those defensive errors. Wouldn't want to actually win anything in his final season.

Re: Europa League 2017/18 Discussion Thread

Arsenal’s biggest game of the season. Wenger sticking with the same team that played the first leg. Not confident for this match but looking forward to it. Hope our defence doesn’t let us down. Disappointed that Mkhi isn’t starting, he’s on the bench. Might not be fully fit. Atletico have the advantage and they also have Costa back.

In the first leg at home we didn’t take our chances and gifted them a crucial away goal. If Arsenal can’t beat Atletico with 10 men, I worry what will happen against 11 men. We have to go out there for the win. Arsenal really need to be in the CL next season. Our away form is poor.

Qarabag even scored at Atletico’s ground then so can Arsenal. Going to say 2 or 3-1 to Atletico but hoping I’m wrong and Arsenal win to get to the final. It’s going to be tough but it’s far from impossible. COYG!!!

Did Koscielny snap his Achilles there? Surely that's him out of the World Cup if so?

Looks like thats what went. And he's had Achilles problems for two seasons or so. Really awful for the player. Honestly might be good for France because he's no close to being a dominant defender.

Devastated. Frustrating and painful loss. The result went the way that anyone would have predicted as the damage was done in the first leg. This defeat makes me feel as if my team has been relegated from the Premier league
I knew the tie was over in the first leg. All those chances we wasted in the first leg cost us and now we go out in typical Wenger style. I wanted CL football with the new manager, gutted we have to be in this competition(EL) again next season.

Wenger leaving is like winning a trophy. The better team went through and I hope Atletico lose to Marseille in the final. Just want to get the season over now so Arsenal can start rebuilding in the summer.

Re: Europa League 2017/18 Discussion Thread

Disappointed. Can't claim devastated. I was emotionally prepared for this outcome before the first leg, but especially after the first leg. It was a pretty Arsenal way to go out. Do really well in the first leg, fairly much dominate and have a notable advantage (the early red card), yet only manage 1 goal, and then have it all collapse on a wretched defensive breakdown to give away the away goal. And this match... do well but never well enough, never dominate, rarely create real scoring chances. I guess it might have been "more Arsenal" to get blown away in the first leg by 3 or 4 goals and then fight back just enough in the second leg to make it look competitive when it wasn't (Bayern, Monaco, Milan).

I so wanted the club to make the final and get that missing trophy for the boss. Just couldn't get past the same issues that have haunted us for years. Wenger got us this far, but Wenger's way also ensured we couldn't finish the job. In a way, that's more fitting to most of his tenure.
