Definitely looks beautiful, and watching the whole conference I liked most of what I saw from the gameplay aspect. Not crazy about the stagger thing.

My chief concern is waiting all this time for essentially a game that's just about Midgar because that's not even 20% of the original game and it comes off as classic money grabbing from Square Enix to release the game in parts. 2 discs is what I've heard so far, but if this is their approach I'm having a hard time they can go from leaving Midgar to the end of the original game with just a second release. I'm not even sure how that's going to work once you get to part 2, does your leveling up carry over?

    Re: Final Fantasy VII Remake

I would imagine save data helps carry over stuff. Itll just be similar to episodic games like TWD, Re Rev 2 and so on.

Im honestly just viewing it as a case of expanding FF7 into a proper game saga a la FF13. There's likely gonna be a ton of new content if theyve got two discs worth of Midgar.

I imagine its not solely Midgar but thatll be the main crux. We also dont know if theyre going to change things up with the story right?

It's not exactly like it. It takes a lot of elements form the ATB system from FF7 but more so in terms of the timer being how long till you can use a special attack.

New trailer looks great. Still have some reservations about the voice acting and dialogue as it's giving me FFXIII vibes.

Aeris looks so good. Also love that Biggs, Wedge and Jessie seem to be getting more attention.

    TURKS! DON CORNEO! SQUATS! FROGS!

The big plus for me so far in these trailer releases is seeing how much of Biggs, Wedge and Jessie we are getting. As much as I liked them in the original, the game moves at such a pace that their usually dead within 2 hours of playing and then they become completely overshadowed when Aerith gets stabbed; by giving them much more on screen time, actual voice actors etc, the plate falling should be 100 times more impactful.

The thing that stood out to me the most was the appearance of Shiva because 1) you don't encounter any summons in Midgar Disc 1 and 2) you don't get Shiva until Junon. I guess they felt the need to change things up a little because otherwise you'd be releasing a FF title that has no summons at all in the game if you stick to the exact events of the orignal.

Cloud playing darts gave me GTA: Midgar vibes. They are putting way more detail into fleshing out part 1 of disc 1 than I imagined they would.

Whats the combat system like in the later FF games? I've only played little bits of the series after FF7.

    Very very different.

8 - pretty much the same battle system as 7 but you can't enjoy it because you're spending twenty minutes drawing any useful magic from every enemy. Limit breaks and summons are ok.

9 - pretty much the same as the previous two but sloooooooooooow. Very slow. Limit break system is trash. Summons are ok.

10 - very different. This is completely turn based where nothing moves until the previous person has moved. Leads to slightly more challenging and more tactical battles. Limit breaks haven't been better, and neither have summons.

12 - amazing battle system where you input how characters should react in different situations. E.g if my character drops below 50% health, they will heal. Very creative and leads to fluid battles. Probably my favourite ever battle system and something I'd love to see them bring back. Limit breaks and summons are ass.

13 - a big shift here away from the traditional FF formula. You now control one character and can input multiple attacks in s row. Very fast paced and you constantly have to be on your toes and change your paradigms (job classes). I love this battle system when it opens up and some of the fights in 13 are my fave, but it's also quite divisive. Summons are ass and limit breaks don't exist.

15 - this is the most drastic shift and probably similar to what you get from 7 remake. It's really fast and looks amazing, but the gameplay is flat. It's "press X to win until you're low on health then warp/instantly heal". Regular spells no longer exist, instead you have one off nukes that are fun but really limit the gameplay. Summons are random and you don't choose which one pops up. Overall it's a pretty battle system but lacks any sort of depth, difficulty and strategy.

    Re: Final Fantasy VII Remake

    That sounds...depressing.

I always liked how simple and easy the FF7 battle system was. Going off this list it seems like it may have been the most enjoyable, at least for me. Everything was easy and available; normal attacks, spells, summons, limit breaks.

    Re: Final Fantasy VII Remake

The one thing that makes me really worry about the remake is if they follow the mash X to win battle system that made FF15 so unchallenging and dull to play.

    Re: Final Fantasy VII Remake

I think I heard that there's going to be two types of battle system. There's a modern one, which I imagine will follow on from XIII and XV, and also a "classic mode". Not sure if it's true or not though.
