Re: The Totally Random Movie Discussion Thread

Finally got around to watching Jurassic World II. Real let down in my opinion, though I wasn't much of a fan of the first and to be honest I feel like even the original trilogy isn't that great on a rewatch, the script and acting in the trilogy is pretty woeful at times. Though nostalgia and sentimentality make up for those flaws.

But this one just felt like beating a dead horse, again. Like how many times are they going to run the exact same scenario/story of some evil bastard capturing some dinosaurs for nefarious/greedy reasons? Is there no other story that anyone in Hollywood can think up for the Jurassic World Universe? Its still a great premise for movies, but a different direction beyond the same story repeated with different baddies would be nice. A movie about Dinosaurs in the modern World is unique enough without needing that story tacked on every step of the way.

If you guys get a chance, check out Waves. Watched it in November when I was in L.A. and probably would never have checked it out otherwise. I watched it twice again this past week after it came out online and still love it. It's a family drama but the film's fun to watch/listen to.

Watched Gone Girl last night. Such a roller coaster that really drew me into it more and more. The ending is a infuriating though.

Rewatched La La Land. It's such a weird film for me. I like Stone, Gosling & Chazelle, I'm a sucker for a good musical, it all looks fantastic visually....

And yet I just can't get any emotional attachment to it. I know it's a good film that deserves all the buzz it got, but there's a reason it's taken this long for a second viewing.

Awful story & script. Lots of better movies that year.

The love story between the two leads comes off as fake and frivolous, while it’s also hard to root for people occupying a world that no one outside of it truly understands. It was a movie made as a love letter to a specific group of people, with no real concern about how it emotionally affected the rest of its potential audience.

Speaking of musicals, I watched Rocketman for the first time last night. I loved it, I thought the acting was top notch and of course the music was superb. Musicals aren't usually my thing but I really enjoyed that

How do you measure it up to Bohemian Rapsody? I think I enjoyed Bohemian Rapsody more because I'm not much of an Elton John guy but Rocketman was the better movie. Also good on them just having a straight up gay sex scene without trying to circumvent it or anything.

I haven't seen Bohemian Rhapsody. Heard good things about it, but I feel like the only person in the world that just can't stand Queen.

Oh word? I think if you can stomach it, they're interesting to watch in comparison to each other. Both about gay artist, both musicals, both dealt with substance abuse, both british, both have game of thrones actors playing John Reid. They differ in a lot of ways too, but just the fact that they were released in such close proximity and were very alike, and they contrast in interesting ways too.

ALL THAT SAID. Bohemian Rhapsody was directed by Bryan Singer so dont sweat skipping it

Don't bother then. I enjoyed it a lot, but it's pretty polarising and if you don't even like the music going in then it's pretty clear you're probably gonna hate it haha.

Rocketman hits Now TV next month, so watching it soon. Looking forward to it.

I'd never even heard an Elton John song prior to watching Rocketman and I dug it.

Not since like 96 or 97 when I'd have had no idea who he was.

I knew a few songs by name but watching it they were all new to me.

Why don’t we talk about how Deakins is now a two time, two time Oscar winner?

I watched Escape Plan 2 tonight. I wasn't expecting anything good out of it, but holy shit it's abysmal. Big Dave couldn't save it.

Him and Stallone both seemed to not like it, which is why I never got around to watching it. They do seem higher on the third one though.
