WC Decides: The Greatest Premier League Team - The Goalkeeper

WC Decides: The Greatest Premier League Team - The Goalkeeper

I was thinking of doing this for a while, so I thought it would be fun if we all went through and decided on the greatest Premier League team, position by position and then show our ultimate, democracy filled team since football was invented in 1992. WC's All Time Premier League team will be 4-4-2, because we are all inspired by Mike Bassett and the cornerstone of English football. We could even do a manager poll too, but it seems a bit redundant since it'll be the most lopsided overwhelming poll in the history of polls.

Every Saturday a new thread will be posted and open for the week to discuss the best in that particular position(s). Then I will post the results here before opening up the next position.

    On to the discussion.

Every great team needs a great goalkeeper behind them, so what better place to start the discussion. We've been blessed with some amazing keepers over the years with some single handily winning games that they shouldn't have. Use any criteria you would like for your vote - do you value a great couple of individual seasons, do you value longevity, or somewhere in the middle? What makes the greatest Premier League goalkeeper the greatest?

Please vote with your top three Premier League Goalkeepers in history via PM to me by 5.00PM GMT on Saturday 7th September. E.G:

    1- Massimo Taibi (3 points)
    2- Stephen Bywater (2 points)
    3- Peter Enckelman (1 point)

Also use this thread to pitch who you think is the best, or who deserves to be in the discussion.

Didn't we try this before and we never got further than the defence?

This feels like a lock of a position to me with PS as #1

Ageist question. I can only pick from this decade as my memory doesn't even extend to last decade outside of United games.

Two come to mind straight away.

Only been watching football for a few years now. Gotta base it off that, and what I know about history.

Re: WC Decides: The Greatest Premier League Team - The Goalkeeper

Can't remember us trying this before but I'll try to stick to this if there's enough interest.

While there's been some great keepers like Cech, Van Der Sar and De Gea, I think this is one of the more straightforward picks for me.

Peter Schmeichel was a monster of a keeper. One of the earliest keepers that I can remember that was brilliant at distribution, with his long throws starting plenty of counter attacks. World class shot stopper. And also a leader on the pitch. I think he was as big a reason as any player for Man Utd's dominance in the 90s, and he's the one player that Fergie really struggled to replace once he was gone.

The defining match for me was in March 1996 against us at St James' Park. We were the best attacking side in the league and top by 4 points. Man Utd came to our place and Schmeichel won them that game in one of the best goalkeeping performances I've seen.

Don't how how it's anyone other than the Great Dane to be fair. We've had some amazing keepers over the life of the PL alongside Schmeichel such as Cech, De Gea, Seaman and VDS, and now we've added Allison and Ederson to the mix but it's too early for them to be considered to be fair. We've also some some right eccentric keepers too haha.

Re: WC Decides: The Greatest Premier League Team - The Goalkeeper

    Cool, this should be fun.

For keepers I can see getting in, Cech, Seaman, Van Der Sar and even De Gea have longevity and quality and can see them making the top 3. I also had a weird love for Shay Given and Joe Hart's reputation nowadays belies how good he was at the start of the decade, but I don't see either of those cracking it against the competition.

But Schmeichel was on another planet. He was like a goalkeeping alien. The fact that he was in goal gave United a psychological advantage before the game even started. I remember going to the Lane to see Spurs/United and wondering how the hell we were supposed to score against him before he'd really done anything. He was brilliant, had a long career and had an aura that no-one has really come close to since. He's going to be my number one pick by some distance.

    Few points Shocky:

    1) Is this greatest or best?

    2) Are we counting just Premier League performances or are we talking overall career (e.g Ronaldo, Suarez)

    3) If Scott Parker doesn’t make it, it’s a travesty

    1) Whatever you'd like. If you wish to vote Suarez because his 13/14 season is better than anyone else's then go for it. If you want to vote Ryan Giggs for being a top player since dinosaurs walked the earth then you go for it.

All I'd ask is don't vote purely on trophies won. I don't want to see anyone voting for Phil Neville solely because he won a shit load.

    2) Premier league career only, so what Ronaldo has done at Real Madrid, Juve and Portugal shouldn't be factored in.

Still three days to get votes in for the keeper place

This should be one of the easiest picks as there are really only 5 to choose from IMO (PS, DDG, Seaman, VDS, Cech) - but still found it difficult to narrow it down to just 3.

Number one was an easy choice as discussed already though.

    And he scores goals...!

Re: WC Decides: The Greatest Premier League Team - The Goalkeeper

Thanks to the following voters who chimed in to the greatest goalkeeper list: OMB, DeclanDimi, Ed, Baloocha, TWG, Wolf Beast, Baldrick, Franchiser, Keefmoon, DarkestEarth, PS, MC16, Mikk, Order and Nash. A great turn out for the first part of our list.

    The Honourable Mentions:

    Tim Howard - 1 Point
    Shay Given - 2 Points
    Mark Schwarzer - 2 Points
    David James - 3 Points
David De Gea - 5 Points
    David Seaman - 8 Points

I have to say, while I didn’t vote for either of them, I love the Given and Schwarzer shouts. Similar keepers too - both superb shot stoppers for teams outside the usual top teams. David James is erratic but you can’t argue his longevity. De Gea may be a case of the vote being done at the wrong time as if this was run a couple of years ago I could see him getting some more love. Probably for me the best shot stopper the league has seen. Seaman was a classic goalkeeper, albeit remembered for a couple of (very notable) mishaps.

    Third place:

Edwin Van Der Sar - 10 Points

Legendary Dutch goalkeeper, a beast at Fulham, and the man behind that Man Utd defence in the late 00s.

    Second place:

    Petr Cech - 22 Points

Never quite the same after his head injury but holds the record for most Premier League clean sheets and nobody can forget what a beast he was in that Mourinho side. Played at a top level in the Premier League longer than almost any other keeper.

WC’s Premier League Goalkeeper is …

    Peter Schmeichel - 43 Points

A keeper so great that even his kid turned into a title winning keeper. A storming win for the Great Dane as one of the stalwarts of the Manchester United side from the 90s takes his place in this team. I imagine he won’t be the only one. He's one of the most intimidating keepers to ever play the game, a great shot stopper, superb distribution, and perhaps most importantly for a goalkeeper: a leader. He was an integral part of five Premier League title wins in the 90s with Manchester United, including being named Premier League player of the year in 1996.

    The Team So Far:

    --- Peter Schmeichel ---
    --- x ---- x --- x ---- x ----
    --- x ---- x --- x ---- x ----
    ---- ---- x ---- x ---- -----

Next part we'll be looking for the best Right Back in Premier League history. Thread to be posted soon.

Yea...no real surprise there. I put Schwarzer on my second spot. Always had a spot for him in my heart... also, before I decided on my list, I looked at the 100 or more clean sheets list on Wikipedia.
