I mean the questions to ask of Emile Smith-Rowe is can he stay healthy? Also, while in good form at the moment, will he stay in good form, and if he drops off, who takes his place?

That's exactly it. He's been a promising player for awhile. But injuries are a factor. I would be concerned if we brought in no-one, but spending big for a key player like Buendia or Aouer also seems dicey. A loan is definitely safer and hopefully ESR would keep getting some game time and progressing.

And as for us having a van der Beek of our own... we have that with Pepe. A 72m backup. We brought in Wilian on high wages. And now first choice RW looks be Saka.

BTW I know lots of non-Arsenal fans aren't going to be watching Arsenal that much match to match so it might not stand out as much as it should, but Saka is just really fucking good.

Saka has been superb. If your struggles continue the bigger boys will come circling.

The craziest thing about Saka is that he's been almost everywhere. he broke through as the emergency LB when Tierney was out. He's been great at LW but can also play centrally. Now he's absolutely killing it on the RW. At least part of his effectiveness on the RW is down to him linking up so well with ESM, but man.... he's already proven insanely versatile.

Mat Ryan in on loan as backup...good move there Papa, will kill any remaining confidence the Icelandic bloke had though.

Wasnt it already rumoured they were looking at loaning out Runarsson just over a week ago? Pretty sure the guy already knew he was out the door for at least the next six months.

Mat Ryan is also leagues better than him. Ryan's fall fun grace at Brighton has been really strange considering he's been arguably their best player over the last few seasons.

    Re: Transfer Talk Thread

The Iceland bloke was a terrible signing. Apparently we brought him in almost entirely on the recommendation of a new GK coach, who had worked with him before. He was one of the worst GKs in Ligue 1 last year and lost his starting job. Nothing about him made anyone think he was at the level to be a backup at a bigger club. But we don't have scouts anymore so... wasted some money.

Happy with the Ryan signing, even on loan. He's a childhood Arsenal supporter and always gotta love that.

All reports now pointing to Odegaard on his way.

Does make me wonder if he'll push Leno for a starting spot though. Consistently Brighton's best player so could be interesting to see him given a proper try.

Ryan's a great signing. Much better competition for Leno and could push him for a starting spot, though I think Leno has been very good this season.
Ryan's too good for the bench though, it's strange that Brighton have moved him on so swiftly. Fair play to them in having that much faith in young Rob Sanchez, who has done well to his credit.

If Ozil ends up winning Fenerbahce the league then I'm going to root against Arsenal for the rest of their existence.

    Re: Transfer Talk Thread

So loan for Odegaard. 2m fee and no option to buy. Its not ideal but it might actually be a smart move by Arsenal? the lack of creativity has made the almost-purchase of Auoar from Lyon in the summer all the more grating. Partey was still the smarter move, I think. But Auoar is apparently now focused on moving to Barcelona or Real Madrid so fair play to him. Buendia from Norwich is interesting but also comes with risks, as well as a significant investment. Spending big on a player may not be necessary as ESR has been, frankly, fantastic. But he's also a young player and not certain to maintain that. So have another option seems pretty necessary. Odegaard provides that option without a huge investment. If he is amazing for us, we can try to buy in the summer. If he's another Denis Suarez, at least we didn't spend big. And that's a legit possibility - Odegaard hasn't played much at all since June and will be badly lacking fitness.

Sounds like a perfect deal for all parties to be honest. Real get him off the books and get a small fee, Arsenal get a talented player at little cost...I am with you about match fitness though, it will be tough especially given how fast these games are coming.

Its that fitness issue that keeps me from feeling this was a great deal for Arsenal. I mean, it could be. But I'm not calling it that until we see what impact his fitness has.

A nice element is that he's pretty versatile. He can play wide so he's an option on the RW (not sure about LW) and was more of a box-to-box central mid for Sociedad, so he could even be an option in the mix with Ceballos and Elneny.

I would MASSIVELY prefer Odegaard getting 20-30 minutes late in the match rather than Willian. I didn't see a lot of him in yesterday's match and from what I did see, he looked like he was trying. But by god he's been a terrible signing. I'm not sure I've seen a player have no positive statistical contributions to a match the way that Willian often does.
