WWE Wrestlemania 28 - World Heavyweight Champion Daniel Bryan vs Sheamus

Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan (World Heavyweight Championship Match)
By: Alex Giannini February 19, 2012
Tags: WrestleMania XXVIII, Sheamus, Daniel Bryan

As he’s done repeatedly over the course of his World Heavyweight Championship reign, Daniel Bryan once again found a way to walk out of a WWE arena with his title in hand Sunday night at WWE Elimination Chamber. In a sadistic stipulation where the odds of winning are 6-to-1 for each of the competitors involved and only get worse if competitors enter the Elimination Chamber sooner, the submission specialist overcame The Great Khali, Cody Rhodes, Wade Barrett, Big Show and Santino Marella to retain his title and send him on a collision course with Royal Rumble winner Sheamus at WrestleMania XXVIII.

After the brutal Elimination Chamber Match ended, Sheamus — who is guaranteed the title opportunity of his choosing at The Show of Shows thanks to his Royal Rumble Match victory — arrived and delivered an emphatic message to Daniel Bryan. With a punishing maneuver that slammed the champion to the mat, Sheamus ended all speculation as to what title he has in his sights come WrestleMania. (WATCH EXCLUSIVE: SHEAMUS EXPLAINS CHALLENGING BRYAN)

And following the events of Feb. 17’s explosive SmackDown where the World Heavyweight Champion spit directly in The Great White’s face, a Sheamus-Bryan title match on The Grandest Stage of Them All possesses special intrigue.

But this rivalry has deeply seeded roots, as just one year ago The Celtic Warrior defeated Bryan to win the United States Championship. That bout proved crucial in Sheamus’ career, as not only did he claim the U.S. Title for the first time, but the win snapped a losing streak that dated back to King of the Ring months earlier. Further, before entering the match, Sheamus vowed that if he didn’t defeat the submission specialist, he would quit WWE.

That didn’t happen, and these days the two-time WWE Champion seems almost invincible and is focused once again on Daniel Bryan and a prize that has eluded him thus far in his career — the World Heavyweight Championship.

The events of the Feb. 17 episode of SmackDown played a crucial part in setting all this into motion. That night, Bryan’s forfeit “victory” over Randy Orton — who was unable to compete due to a concussion — led to a surprise announcement.

After Bryan demanded ring announcer Lilian Garcia to proclaim him the winner of the non-match against WWE’s Apex Predator, SmackDown General Manager Teddy Long entered the arena. To the great delight of the WWE Universe, Long scheduled Bryan to compete that night against none other than The Great White Sheamus.

A despondent Bryan did his best to avoid the Celtic Warrior, but when Bryan tried to escape the ring, satisfied with a count-out victory, Sheamus was there to thwart the champion’s oft-played tactic. Back inside the ring, however, Bryan dug deep into his bag of tricks, playing mind games on his opponent and exploiting The Great White’s white-hot temper. When literally backed into the corner, Bryan slapped Sheamus, clearly riling his opponent.

What happened next proved to be one of Bryan’s vilest moves to date. While seated on the top rope, Bryan spit in the face of The Great White, inciting Sheamus’ fury and leading to The Celtic Warrior’s disqualification. Officially, Bryan was able to add yet another victory to an already impressive list.

While a number of those victories have been controversial, Bryan’s record since cashing in Money in the Bank cannot be argued. He continually finds ways to win, successfully defending his title against all challengers over the course of his championship reign. But will Sheamus, one of the hottest Superstars on the roster and already possessing a big victory against Bryan, finally end that reign?

Last year, the scheduled U.S. Title rematch between Sheamus and Bryan was bumped from the WrestleMania pay-per-view and was witnessed only by the WWE Universe in attendance and those who purchased the home video. This year, the two will share the main event spotlight with the World Heavyweight Championship on the line. Find out who walks out of Miami as the champion April 1 at WrestleMania XXVIII, only on pay-per-view!
The match that was bumped off of last year's Wrestlemania is now happening for the World Heavyweight Title. Ironically, it's probably just as important on the card as it would have been last year thanks to some additional huge matches this year. I see this as a match that won't receive the sort of attention a World Title match should get, but it's my dark horse for MOTN.

    YES!

Assuming it goes longer than 30 seconds, I think they've got a really good shot at being MOTN. They're two of my favourite wrestlers on the roster and they've had very good matches in the past. The winner is super obvious but hopefully that won't take away the drama too much. In terms of match quality, I'm probably looking forward to this and have higher expectations for this than any other match on the card.

Yeah, it's between this and the other World Title match for MOTN so far I think. The winner being so obvious hopefully won't take away from the match quality and excitement like Shock said.

This match is ideal for WWE at this year's Mania imo as it gives the opportunity for these two guys to really impress in a reasonably big match, without really needing to draw.

Wouldn't mind seeing this steal the show & personally I reckon it could well do soo but I dunno at the same time It's gonna have some strong competition for that honour with Jericho/Punk also happening. Taker/HHH III should be good too. Plus Rock & Cena will probably win in the entertainment department. Still should be a very fun match no doubt.

Pretty much this. On paper, this could be the most hard-hitting match on the card, and a goddamn HIAC match is on the card. I'm pumped for this match! Kudos to the WWE for giving both men the confidence for this to take place.

By the way, it's Bryan's first Mania, and he's going into it as a World Champ. They grow up so fast!

It's Bryan's second 'Mania, Nicky. He wrestled the dark match last year... Unless you mean it's his first appearance on the main WrestleMania card, which is true, even though Bryan/Sheamus for the US Title was announced pre-'Mania last year.

Give these guys fifteen minutes and they'll give you a match where Bryan makes you believe he'll retain, even when we all know that he won't.

This is a mouth watering match. Guys who are still both fairly new finding different easy to the main event. Both incredibly talented wrestlers and while it will be overshadowed by other great matches this will still be a treat to watch. Both deserve this main event shot and it is now Sheamus' time to get a permanent parking space in the main event scene. Bryan has done well since winning the big one, but this is Sheamus' moment and I hope both men enjoy every bit of this because both their careers are gonna sky rocket from this. Can't wait.
Shit.....You shoot me in a dream, you better wake up and apologize.

Expect Orton to get in this (and I'm all for it). Match will be short and good.

I am looking forward to this match so much its not even funny. Hopefully they'll get 15 minutes or so, and if they do, we will see pure gold.

I think anything beyond a Sheamus victory here will be a bit questionable, after months and months of being protected.

    God I hope not.

I can see how he would, but it would suck if he did. To be honest, I'd prefer he be the man to feud with Bryan after Backlash (or whatever it's called these days). They have a legit beef, with the concussion that Orton suffered, but one on one makes way more sense when it comes to Sheamus vs. Bryan and Orton vs. Bryan.

Maybe a triple threat after WrestleMania 28 between them that works Sheamus out of the picture and towards Henry or (if there's a draft) Jericho, Ziggler, etc... That way Bryan can have a reason to take on Orton, like Orton has a reason to go after Bryan.

Looks like it'll be Orton vs. Kane, so don't worry.

This match just got a lot less exciting.

How is it less exciting than a triple threat? We have two of the best workers in the company against each other in a storyline that is actually pretty good (heel who weasels his way out with the belt constantly vs unstoppable babyface).

Ideally we'll get Sheamus/Bryan feuding for a few more months, then Bryan/Orton feud in the summer (if we can't get the Punk/Bryan feud, anyway). Sheamus can defend v guys like Henry, Del Rio, Christian, whoever, post Bryan feud.
I solemnly swear I am up to no good

    What Steve said.

I'm baffled as to how not inserting Orton into the match, makes the match (which he wasn't in anyway) any less interesting or exciting. The match doesn't need him and given that most Triple Threat end up as one-on-one matches any way, while one guy lays outside and rests, I'm much happier to get a straight one-on-one match.

That's the one thing I'm really worried about. I hope this gets the time it deserves and isn't cut down.

Kinda don't see why people are jumping to the conclusion of Orton Vs Kane either. Dont forget he beat up the 6 guys after the tag match on Raw too. It could have just been another random attack.

As for adding Orton to the match either way would be fine in terms of entertainment but a one on one match would work better overall
