    WC Decides Television's Best Characters

They are a big part of what makes a great television show, be it a comedy, a drama, an animation or something else - if great writing is the cornerstone of a fantastic program, great characters are one of the most visible signs of it being so.

They could be amongst your favourites because they're funny; believable; give you nostalgia or are just so damn well-written that they either feel real or enhance a show a lot. This vote will decide who WC's favourite television characters - and it should be quite a bit of fun, if all things go well, in the process of deciding this. Who will be #1 - Brick? Tony Soprano? Bart Simpson? Malcolm Tucker? GOB Bluth? Phil Dunphy? Tracy Barlow? JR Ewing? Basil Fawlty? Susie Greene? Omar from the Wire? Kel from Kenan and Kel? The decision's in your hands.

Send me your final list of your favourite characters via a clearly-titled PM - you can list up to 50, with a minimum of 20. Your #50 gets 1 pt, and your #1 gets 50 pts. In the Crocker vote style that is taking WC by storm with its efficacy, I'll tally up all the votes and reveal the top characters in lots of 5 or 10 until we get to #1.

Feel free to use this thread to campaign for your favourites, chat about the tournament or throw ideas out. Hope you all like it & all the best.

Wow, this is going to take some work, already know most of my top ten mind you, but considering the age gap on this site I'll bet most of them aren't even near it.

I wouldn't be so sure, Fuji - lots of folk in their mid-twenties and thirties here, and fans of classic series. I'm personally a fan of shows from as far back as the fifties. TV stations over here, and in the UK, were/are pretty big on repeating much older series like Only Fools and Horses, Yes Minister, Not the Nine O'Clock News, Are You Being Served, Some Mothers do 'ave em etc

Good choice, Crocker - and one that gets me thinking. It'll be interesting to see if the same actor can get in under two or more different characters, which is a big achievement to be fair. I think Ed O'Neill could with Al Bundy and now Modern Family's Jay Pritchett.

It'll also be interesting to see how high non-American series rank (since we all watch US series, but only a select few non-US series gain popularity elsewhere) - with the highest ranking British, Canadian etc program characters and such. Since I imagine the #1 will probably be a man (scriptwriters have a bad habit of usually writing men more vividly), it'll be interesting to see the highest ranked woman. Extremes like oldest and youngest nomm'd character could be intriguing too.

I've got at least two older women in my list already...and one in multiple roles at that.

Tracy Barlow - she's an effective character Welbek I'll give you that, but I'm afraid she won't be making my list. HATE that woman.

I've been thinking about this since you tipped me off about it earlier in the day. You will probably get my list by the weekend.

I managed to make a very solid list of 50.

I totally forgot about one of my favorite shows, but hopefully it will be represented otherwise....

The only soap character I think I'd include would be Trevor from Eastenders. God damn, was he a hateable bastard.

Good stuff, Fuji! The women and especially older ones, really do get short-changed - both by the writers and the fans - so I'm glad you're representing them in your list. You got me wondering about the one person in many roles now!

Glad that you'll be on board, Troy - these things are at once easy (so many good characters) and difficult (whittling them down and ordering them.)

Good to hear you're taking part, Nicky. I'm intrigued by your #1 now - that's the one advantage of organising the thing and getting my PM box potentially flooded, being let into your choices before everyone else xD.

I can understand the hate, Ed, but I can't help but love her. I've always liked great villains and she's so convincing as a mass manipulator with a hint of a good side from now and then - hope she stays on past June unlike what the papers say. It's not just the characters you like as people, but the ones you find most effective, though I can understand if no one else lists her because she's just that damn convincing!

    Look forward to your contribution!

Intrigued at what you missed out now, Gravity - your list was very comprehensive, made for a good read :D

East side (of the Atlantic) represent! I've always loved US tv, but I too will be including a load of characters from this side, add a bit of yang to the ying.

Don't post your lists as that removes the suspense - but feel free to talk about individual characters you voted for/missed off and why.

I'll be glad if you're in on this, Marketh! I agree entirely about Trevor, awful man (thus such a good villain) though I will be adding a few from Coronation St too.
