    Idea: Football's Greatest Squad

With all this talk, much of it overblown, about how Barcelona currently have the 'greatest side', an idea came to me for a tournament of sorts on here. I'm not sure whether it'll take off, but here's the concept - everyone interested would write a list of contenders for the accolade of football's greatest ever squad - e.g. [Team Name] [season].

The teams can be from any division, but can't be international sides, so you couldn't nominate, for example, Brazil 1970. The teams will then be pitted against each other in one-on-one contests until our list is down to a single winner. If this idea took off, we could do an international version and subsequently pit the top domestic teams as chosen by WC against the top international sides. What do you guys think?

I thought you were going to be asking for the actual players to make up the greatest squad which I could have done most of pretty quickly. This however will take a bit longer.

I'm going to start with the most obvious for me:
    Arsenal 2003/04
    United 1998/99

Yeah, I figured that the ideal squad thing was probably overdone, since we all probably already know precisely who we'd put in each position, and there's a fairly good chance that many of us would agree on some inclusions. It might be a bit more difficult to pit a number of great squads against each other and figure out who would come out on top.

    Re: Idea: Football's Greatest Squad

    Nice idea Welby.

    Arsenal (little generous)
    United 68, 99 and 08 (little generous)
    Liverpool 77 and 84
    Milan 89
    Madrid 56 - 60
    Ajax 72
    Barca 09 - current
    Celtic 67

Think that's about it for me. Little biased putting United in three times but sure. I'd say Barca present, Madrid, Milan, Pool 74 and United 99 are the five best by a good distance though.

I'm sure there's a Munich team that should be in there too but I don't know enough about German football really to judge.

    Re: Idea: Football's Greatest Squad

Arsenal's 03-04 squad is the best I've ever seen live, the only others I can think of are:

    Madrid's Galactico's side 01-02
Forests European Cup winning side 79-80

I'd nominate Ron Atkinsons Albion 1978 squad that almost won the league and did well in Europe, but it wouldn't get very far, so I'll leave it out.

Good idea Welby...if the North American Sports Mod(Blitz, you suck ) would think of stuff like this, we'd have more talking than just in the MLB Season/NBA Playoff threads.

That was just my personal nominations rather than a summary of the squads included so far; I don't really know enough about Leeds back then to co-nominate them without researching. It may well get through, though it's really best if you stick to a few seasons max, as I imagine from 65 to 74, the squad changed quite a lot; if you want to cut that period down into two or more distinct squads it'll be better.

    Re: Idea: Football's Greatest Squad

I dont get why so many people are saying the current Barcelona team are one of the best ever. They have three or four quality players who disguise the weaknesses in the rest of the team. Take out Messi and Barcelona would struggle big time. When we played them a few months ago Messi was anonymous and they ended up losing. He showed up for the second leg and they won thanks to him and their usual tactics (play dead until you get a free kick and a yellow card for the opposition).

If Messi gets a long term injury, they're fucked.

    Re: Idea: Football's Greatest Squad

You kidding Daren? They're far better on paper and in reality than the undefeated Arsenal squad.

They have three of the five best players in the world just for starters.

A quality GK who had an off night against Arsenal. Their defence is good if not spectacular. Best midfield in the world with the two very best involved in that, and their attack speaks for itself.

Yes Messi is the main man in that team, but by no means is he a one man team. Iniesta is very nearly on his level, and Xavi isn't far behind either. Villa scores a good few goals too.

Pedro is obviously the weak link in their attack, but he's good too, and Afellay looks promising as well.

Squad depth is their biggest weakness, but then again last Tuesday they were missing two regulars and they still looked strong.

When a team wins three La Liga's in a row (they may as well have) and a European Cup with the potential to add another one this year, they're one of the greatest teams of all time. If they win this year's they'll be at the very top.

That Arsenal side you so love had one fantastic domestic season, but couldn't quite do it on a European stage or continue to do it on the domestic stage the following season so I actually wonder if they should be named in the same bracked as these top teams tbh.

    And he scores goals...!

    Re: Idea: Football's Greatest Squad

I accounted for Inestia and Xavi.

They have three or four quality players who disguise the weaknesses in the rest of the team.
Their defence is average at best and only get away with it because they hit the deck as soon as anyone comes near them.

Winning three leage titles in what is essentially a two league team when the other team has been going through a transitional period isnt really a huge achievement.

Messi has scored over 50 goals this season. If he got injured at the start of the season, Real Madrid would be champions. They are not a great side, but they do have a number of great players who give the illusion of a great side. Good, yes. Best ever, no.

    Re: Idea: Football's Greatest Squad

Thought I'd bring this thread back to the fore and give a bit of an update. We've currently got twenty or so squads, though there's a few folk left to vote and ATLbrand's not yet divided his decade-long Leeds nomination up, so I'll leave the noms open for a bit longer. I was wondering how best to organise the initial round. We're unlikely to get a tournament-even number (e.g. 16, which we've surpassed, or 32, which we're way away from) so two things came to mind:

    1) Instead of launching immediately into team-on-team knockout, the first round could be done under a groups system. We put all the teams into even groups (say groups of 4 or 5) where they are pitted against every member on that group, then the top 1 or 2 gets through

    2) We have a preliminary round where you can vote on the teams nominated and choose which squads most deserve to progress (perhaps the strongest 8-12) thus speeding up the process and avoiding landslide victories. The teams that survive can go one on one, or can be put in groups initially, depending on what you all would prefer.

Of course, I very much welcome other ideas, hybrids or original ones, as to how best to run the initial round.
