Moyes will keep West Ham out of trouble again and will then leave as they want a top manager and a change of direction....you know it's coming.

Barcelona have fired Ernesto Valverde. Clearly needed, because they are languishing down in 1st place in La Liga and already out of the Champions League... emotionally.

Barcelona is an increasingly horribly run club.

Valverde has been treated poorly by Barca IMO. They have had some poor results under him and they're not the force they have been in the past under Rijkaard, Guardiola, Villanova and Enrique, but the squads that those managers worked with were so formidable and loaded with talent, it was a freak generation of players.
I don't know much about Quique Setien but I'm very surprised that he's got the job when Pochettino was available. I thought he was a shoe in for the job.

Disgraceful from Barca really. Poch is an Espanyol guy so would realistically never manage Barca so always took that rumour with a pinch of salt.

Its funny that Barcelona look so poorly run in footballing terms, but they are tops on the football rich list that was just released by Deloitte. Above United and Madrid.

But yeah, everything about this club is just keeping Messi happy. On the pitch, they rely on him MASSIVELY.

Valverde probably deserved to get fired for some things that happened, but those were last season. Pulling the shit with offering the job to Xavi and then lying about it.... Just pure bullshit from a club that claims to be above such things.

Henry, Koeman, Xavi and the guy they've just appointed. That's 4 managers being talked to about the role, crazy.

I will say this for, Barcelona - Setien is actually a really interesting appointment. Plus, I love his name. I use Setien (its pronounced like St. Etienne) and I often use it as a my manager avatar in Football Manager. Weird fact!

Setien is pretty relentlessly attacking. Not the most defensively stable, but its not like Betis had world class defenders. He did really good things at Betis, but he also fell out with the board. I think he likes tactical structure, which will be intriguing to see what he wants to do with Messi.

    Re: Managerial Comings & Goings

What do people think about Juve sacking Sarri and then appointing Pirlo, merely days after he was appointed their U-23's manager?

I can understand sacking Sarri to a degree as he really has underperformed with a world class team and despite winning the league again he only managed it by the skin of their teeth and because Inter blew it. I don't think it's solely Sarri's fault though, as Juve are an aging team that is struggling to generate fresh, young players. They're relying heavily on the old guard and most of the signings they're making are players who are proven but are either at their peak or are just past it. Not getting further in the Champions League though was a real kick for them and probably the straw that broke the camels back, or rather the excuse the board needed to get rid.

Appointing Pirlo is unbelievable to me. One of the best midfielders ever, no doubt, but he has no coaching experience at all. It's going to be fascinating to see how he gets on. I think making him U-23's coach was a good move as he then could have gained experience in view of becoming first team manager down the line, but then to thrust him into it like this. I can see it going very wrong for them, which would be a crying shame for Pirlo himself.

Sarri just won the league in his first season then gets sacked it's crazy really.

Pirlo is a strange one when there are accomplished coaches out there that could do the job they expect. I hope he does a top job as new managers are always good to see but it is a left field one for me.

    Re: Managerial Comings & Goings

Sarri wasn't a good fit for Juve long term, he talked down their chances of winning the CL in interviews and when you've spent the money Juve have done on people like Ronaldo, the ambition has to be better and I think that rubbed the board up the wrong way. On Ronaldo, I don't think the two of them had the best relationship and it probably is better to move on Sarri than move on the 2nd best player in modern history, someone who was dragging Juve over the line single handedly sometimes. Also, they barely won the title. Inter were only 1 point off them and I think they'll be kicking themselves because they know this was a year Juve were there for the taking if pushed hard enough. In the last 9 seasons where they've won Seria A, this was their lowest points total and this was the smallest gap between 1st and 2nd they've had, and they know Inter will push harder this coming season. I'm not sure winning the CL itself would of been enough to keep him, I think the board knew they'd made the wrong appointment this year and wanted to change to someone better suited to the club.

On Pirlo, it continues this modern obsession of clubs appointing former players before their managerial CV suggests they are ready for a step up like this - thinking of Ole at Utd, Arteta at Arsenal, Lampard at Chelsea, Zidane at Madrid. I've seen it myself recently with Darren Moore at West Brom for a less sexy example. When something has gone wrong with the previous appointment and there's a manager fans are cold towards and don't think is a good fit or 'gets the club', the modern move is to then appoint a 'club legend' to replace them if you like because instantly the fans are on board because they love the player and think they know the DNA of a club better than some outsider would be. Apparently Pirlo really impressed Juve with his presentation when landing the U23 job so there's a belief there's a great manager there, but this is throwing him in at the deep end. I also wonder if boards are doing it because it's the cheaper option. There's no way Ole for example when he took over United was paid the same salary Jose commanded after 2 decades of being a manager for big clubs.

    Re: Managerial Comings & Goings

Sarri deserved the sack; you don't understand a club like Juve if you think winning the league is enough. Like Ed pretty much pointed out, it's their lowest points total ever, they played dreadful football despite the promises of less pragmatism than Allegri, eliminated to a Lyon side in the UCL that couldn't even qualify for Europe next season, squad issues, especially with Ronaldo.

However, I can't see how Pirlo is the answer. Makes no sense. Sure, he'll probably win the league next season because 1) it's Juve 2) it's Serie A 3) Ronaldo. But all the other guys Ed mentioned had at least some coaching experience, if not actual managerial experience. Pirlo has none. I get that he's Andrea freaking Pirlo, but that doesn't mean his genius will translate, as man management is so important to being a manager.

Plus, Juve have SIGNIFICANT squad issues. I got into it in the Transfer Talk thread yesterday, if you fancy a better look at that

So, who do we think will be the first Premier League Managerial casualty this time around?

I know how impatient that Leeds board is so I'm going with a dark horse in Bielsa. A couple of losses and that crazy owner will jump the gun.

I'm sticking with my prediction of Moyes. West Ham are a mess, and the only thing the owners will know what to do when they struggle is change the manager.

West Ham have been a mess for years.

I work with a West Ham fan and innocently asked him if he was gonna buy the black and gold kit just because it's genuinely nice. The response was he was not going to put any money into the pockets of the West Ham board right now. I think that says it all right now really.
