This is a tragic day for wrestling, he was an all-time great and a legend in every sense of the word. I'm still in shock at how sudden this is. He was an amazing wrestler, one of the very best of all time, and he will be sorely missed.

    Rest In Peace.

Shocking Death of a Japanese Legend

    by Mike Johnson @ 2009-06-13 10:32:26

I am extremely saddened to report that one of the greatest in-ring workers of the modern age and the founder of Pro Wrestling NOAH, Mitsuhau Misawa died earlier this morning (tonight in Japan) following an in-ring accident stemming from a suplex.

    We will have more shortly.

    Credit: PWInsider

Wow, I have no idea what to say. I'm more shocked than sad, since I'd never actually seen a lot of Misawa's classics, but this is so sudden. He was only 46...

You beat me to it. I just posted something similar in the news/rumours.

This is indeed a tragedy, given how popular he is and his reputation of being one of the best of all time. I'm just in shock right now.

Ah, just posted this in the indy section.

I'm in shock, this is surreal. So sudden. He was an all-time great, one of the best ever, and his contribution to the wrestling world will be sorely, sorely missed.

    Rest in peace.

Re: Shocking Death of a Japanese Legend

I couldn't think anyone as experienced as Misawa could botch a suplex, something must have gone horribly wrong.

    Rest in Peace.

EDIT: Apparently he took a Belly To Belly suplex, which knocked him unconscious during a NOAH show at the Hiroshima Green Arena. He was taken to hospital and pronounced deceased soon after.

Re: Shocking Death of a Japanese Legend

It wasn't really a botch, a backdrop suplex is a dangerous move to take by nature.

For those unaware of who he is, this is the equivilant of if Ric Flair had died during 2007 or something, probably even bigger.

As a fan of the guy, this is pretty surreal.

I've read it was a Backdrop Suplex by Saito. This is just terrible...

Re: Shocking Death of a Japanese Legend

    Translated from a Japanese site:

Mitsuharu Misawa (46) of the professional wrestler was thrown to the partner player with the president of Noah during a match of professional wrestling Noah in a Hiroshima Prefectural synthesis gymnasium green arena of Nakaku, Hiroshima-shi at about 8:45 on the afternoon of 13th and dealt the head a heavy blow. Misawa was carried to the hospital of the city in an ambulance, but, at 10:10, the death was confirmed. According to the person concerned with meeting, Misawa was opened on that day [I participate in the GHC tag championship of the main event of 09] southern navigator Hiroshima meet, and it is sprinkled back drop to partner and deals a head a heavy blow at a ring, and it is said that I lost consciousness.] According to the official homepages of Noah, Misawa is from Koshigaya-shi, Saitama. It is made its debut in 1981 by professional wrestling. I collected popularity as a tiger mask for the second generation. I was dismissed from all-Japan professional wrestling in 2000 and founded Noah aiming at ideal professional wrestling.

EDIT: It was Misawa/Shiozaki vs Bison/Saito. He took a backdrop suplex from Saito, landed on his head, and was pronounced dead at 10:10 pm local Japan time.

Saito would feel absolutely horrible. Poor guy .

Re: Shocking Death of a Japanese Legend

Someone on the ROH board said there should be a 10 bell salute at the show tonight for him. That would be a great idea, imo.

A botched suplex. Just goes to show that anything can happen to anyone.

    EDIT: From Chris Hero's blog:
    Misawa-San
    Current mood:disbelief
Words cannot express how deeply shocked I am. We're all just in utter disbelief. Stunned sadness.

The moments at ringside felt an eternity. Never, in my life, have I wanted the fighting spirit to jump into someone's being more than I wanted tonight. The fans chanted Misawa, Misawa, Misawa. They wanted their Hero to get up so ****ing bad. Just get up. Come on! You're too tough for this. Too strong. I grabbed his boots and held onto them til they took him away.

My heart goes out to his family. His students. His peers. His friends. His fans. His opponents tonight and his partner. It was a freak accident. No one is at fault.
That is just too sad, reading that.

Re: Shocking Death of a Japanese Legend

No one can blame Saito, it was a freak accident. Yeah I just realised it was a taped title match where him and Go were probably going to win, which means footage of it will actually exist (it won't be released, but still). This is just insane. The reprocussions of this could be quite big.

    Holy fuck. This is insane.

    Is this for real?

If so it sucks. I'm not a huge Misawa fan or anything, but he is a true legend and the driving force behind NOAH.

    Wow.

It's always a shame when a wrestler dies so young, it's even worse when they die doing something they had probably done a million times before.

Someone merged, so it's fine. Even though no one's yet blaming Saito, I'm sure he'll be blaming himself for a while. I would feel like shit if I thought I just killed one of the most popular men in my sport.

Could be wrong, but I think this is the first case of a wrestler dying in the ring (or near enough).

I was thinking about this too. It reminds me of what happened to Chris Candido, but on a much larger scale.
